World Premiere of Schoenberg Concerto with
Edward Steuerman as Soloist on GM Hour

"South American Way"
At Club Three 666

The world premiere of Arnold
Schoenberg's new Piano Concerto,
with the Polish-born pianist and
disciple of the composer, Edward
Steuerman, as soloist, will be con-
ducted by Leopold Stokowski on
the General Motors Symphony of
the Air program Sunday, Feb. 6
(NBC, 5:00 to 6:00 p. m., EWT).
Other works to be performed by
the NBC Symphony Orchestra,
presented on the hour, are an
Ariosco by the 17th Century Ital-
ian master, Cesti; Schubert's im-
mortal Unfinished Symphony, and
Perpetuum Mobile by Novacek.
Charles F. Kettering, vice presi-
dent of General Motors and direct-
ing head of its Research Labora-
tories, will give another of his
brief informal talks during inter-
mission.
Stokowski has done more per-
haps than any other conductor to
familiarize the American public
with Schoenberg's music. He con-
ducted the American premiere of
the composer's Gurre Lieder, and
the world premiere of his Violin
Concerto. Schoenberg, who is pro-
fessor of music at the Univer-
sity of Southern California, has
created considerable stir and con-
troversy through the use of what
he calls his own "12-tone system"
of composition. The Piano Con-
certo to be heard on Sunday's
program introduces a maximum
of deviation from formal music
bounds, according to Stokowski.

Revue goers in large numbers
are wending their way to Club
Three 666 to see Bettie Taylor's
new sepia Latin extravaganza,
"South American Way," with a
huge all-star variety cast. Danc-
ing headliners are the Four Cu-
ban Diamonds in authentic and
colorful demonstrations of all the
popular Latin steps. Blues-singing
Lonnie Johnson and his guitar,
heard on the leading discs; love-
ly Bobbe Caston, torch-singing
sensation; Ross and McCain, so-
phisticated ballroom dancers;
Smiling Sammy Jenkins, eccentric
dancer; Bobbe Keys, .singing and
dancing master of ceremonies,
and the eight precision-dancing
Taylorettes are other principal
figures in the lavish production.
Maurice King arranged the com-
plete musical score for the revue
and Teddy Buckner and his or-
chestra executes it in addition
to the dancing assignment.

Edward Steuerman is well
known for his Schoenberg inter-
pretations and, in New York in
1940, was soloist when the com-
poser conducted his own work,
Pierrot Lumaire. Later this sea-
son in New York, Steuerman is
scheduled to introduce another
new Schoenberg composition.

Mildred Bailey Headlines
At Grand Terrace Casino

Mildred Bailey is headlining
the huge revue at the Grand Ter-
race Casino for a second week.
The famous "Rockin' Chair" lady
is a great favorite in Detroit,
which was evidenced by her
opening week's success. Proof
of her nation-wide popularity was
indicated recently when she was
presented with the Esquire award
as the public's favorite radio
songstress of 1943. Mildred's ren-
dition of "Summertime" from
the late George Gershwin's "Por-
gy and Bess" has become almost
as famous as her immortal
"Rockin' Chair". Continuing in
the supporting show are Wynters
and Angeline, topflight ballroom
(lancers; Woodie and Betty,
America's leading thrill roller
skaters; Herbie Lynn, comedy
master of ceremonies; Dick Row-

of the Jewish people.
The Conference issued a mani-
festo, addressed "to the con-
science of the free world, declar-
ing that the "United Nations
have so far failed to implement
measures of rescue" by which
hundreds of thousands of Jews
could have been saved from Nazi
extermination. It also lauded
President Roosevelt for having
established the War Refugee
Board.
It adopted a resolution endors-
ing the American Jewish Confer-
ence and the American Zionist
Emergency Council and urging
the Jewish community to rid it-
self "of irresponsible, non-repre-
sentative, mushroom-like paper
organizations designed to be pro-
ductive of public confusion and
bound to inflict injury to the
cause of Jewish Palestine." It
also adopted a resolution repudi-
ating the American Council for
Judaism for its opposition to po-
litical Zionism.

Rabbi Wolf Gold, chairman

more than 1,200 delegates fr
all sections of the United States
and Canada, including 400 rab-

at one of the sessions that the
rights of minorities must be rec-
ognized by majority groups, and
that in the "Balfour Declaration
the good faith not of the Jew but
of the Gentile is at stake". Com-
menting on the falsehoods that
are being circulated about the
Jews, he said:
"The Jew is not an on 'inter-
national conspiracy' and Jews do
not run the country. In 1936
only 4.8 per cent of 80,000 di-
rectors of corporations in the
United States were Jews. The
Jew does not run the govern-
ment. Believe it or not, of the
more than 1,000 top jobs in the
Federal Government, considerably
less than 5 and scarcely more
than 30 are held by Jews.
