Book Review Series

noon, in the Social Hall of the
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, the
Sisterhood of the congregation
will inaugurate a series of five
book reviews and brunches.
The first of the series will be
given by Mrs. Morris Adler, who
will review "The World of Sho-
lem Aleichem" by Maurice Sam-
uels.
The series will be in charge of
a committee composed of Mes-
dames Louis Tobin, David S.
Diamond, Milton Maddin and
Charles A. Smith.

Dinner To Be Held Feb. 17
"Our Children in War Time,"
what is happening to the chil-
dren of the world under war
time conditions, is the subject
of the lecture by Ella Winter,
psychologist, writer and econo-
mist, for the Detroit Town Hall
at the Cass Theater, Friday
morning, Jan. 28, at 11 o'clock.
Miss Winter, born in Mel-
bourne, Australia, was educated
in Envland and entered politics
as a member of the British Labor
Party's Parliamentary Commit-
tee on Foreign Affairs.

Women's Auxiliary,
Jewish Home for Aged
A regular meeting of the
Women's Auxiliary of the Jewish
Home for Aged was held on Mon-
day, Jan. 17, at 1:30 p. nn. at
the Home.
Mrs. M. J. Greenberg, presi-
dent of the organization, pre-
sided. An enjoyable program was
presented by Miss Eileen Rez-
nick, violinist; Miss Eva Meister,
dramatic reader, and Cantor Irv-
ing Ringel of Bnai David Con-
gregation. Mrs. H. Bregman was
the accompanist.
Mrs. Greenberg named the
nominating committee, Mesdames
I. E. Goodman, A. M. Ferar, J.
Stralser, N. Blatnikoff, D. Kliger,
S. Schwartz, H. Weiss, who will
meet to select the slate of officers
to serve for the coming year.
On Wednesday, Jan. 12, the
board of directors met at the
home of Mrs. S. Levison of Law-
rence Ave. Co-hostess of the
afternoon was Mrs. Joseph Rose.
The ever-important problem of
dues collection was discussed and
plans promulgated for the most
satisfactory solution of this prob-
lem during war times.
On Jan. 22, the Bnai Brith
Hillel Foundation at the Univer-
sity of Michigan will hold its
first mixer since the Christmas
holidays,
The evening will include danc-
ing to the tunes of the latest
popular recordings. A large num-
ber of Hillel members will serve
as hostesses for the event. Novel
entertainment and refreshments
will be extra added attractions.
The occasion will serve to intro-
duce many new servicemen who
have recently arrived on cam-
pus, in newly organized army
units. An invitation, in coopera-
tion with the Jewish Welfare
Board, has been extended to IS
service men stationed at For(
Custer.
Social chairmen for the affair
are Faye R. Bronstein of Chey-
enne, Wyo., and Shirley Levin of
Akron, 0.
A major social event of the
year will occur on the following
week-end, Jan. 29, when the
Hillel Foundation will sponsor
its big winter dance at the Michi-
gan League ballroom. Due to the
large numbers of new service-
men, a date bureau has been set.

of Long Island, N. Y. Gardenias
will be sold at the door, receipts
of which will be given to the
Jewish National Fund, and ad-
mission will be the price of a
war stamp. An attendance of
over 500 couples is expected and
the prospects all point to an en-
joyable evening.

Is Tough!" will address the De-
troit Town Hall audience in the
Fisher Theater Wednesday, Jan.
26, at 11 a. in.
The 34-year-old journalist re-
turned in December for a month's
leave after 16 months in the
European war zone which cul-
minated in some of the war's
hottest fighting on the Tunisian
front, the conquests of Pantel-
leria and Sicily, and the invasion
of Italy. He returns to the Ital-
ian front Feb. I. Korman is
filling the Town Hull date orig-
inally scheduled for Frank Ger-
vasi whose editors have assigned
him to remain in Italy until after
the fall of Rome.

Sokolivker Verein Sells
$20,000 in War Bonds
The
Sokolivker
Progressive
Verein held its installation of
officers on Sunday, Jan. 18, at
Lachar's Hall.
During the course of dinner
the toastmaster, Joseph Cohen,
appealed to the members and
guests present to aid the 4th War
Loan Drive to buy bonds. With
only 25 couples at the affair, the
response was overwhelming and
$20,000 was raised in less than
one hour's time.

To Hold Garret Party
