The joint ultimatum of President Roose-
velt and Prime Minister Churchill should
have profound repercussions among the
Italian people, and we may look forward
with no little confidence to such a drop
in Italian morale that the war will be ap-
preciably shortened by non-cooperation
and sabotage of the Italian workers.

Fascists, exiles and refugees was a logical
act because as victors without the help
of any Italian group, Amgot could issue
the clear-cut decree without the danger
of offending the tender political sensibili-

Sicilians will no doubt enjoy greater
freedom of speech, press and assembly
under the Allied military regime than they
did under their so-called "own govern-
ment". They will be better fed and clothed
by the rehabilitation and feeding agen-
cies than they have been for years.
The other striking significant fact that
has emerged is the weak resistance, and
even mutiny, on the part of the Italian
soldiers. This is not the first time that
units of the Italian army have surrendered
joyously. Why have they done so upon ev-
ery occasion that they have had an oppor-
tunity to do so? We do not believe it is be-
cause the Italian soldiers are less disci-
plined or less courageous than soldiers
of other nations, but we do believe
it is because the Italian army as well as
the Italian people have looked upon Fas-
cism as a phoney which by force, chicane
and bluff took over the Italian govern-
ment and compelled an unwilling people
to do the bidding of Mussolini and his
gang.
It could hardly be expected that the
soldiery who really never believed in
and satisfactorily than in Naziland.
The FBI took care of the Nazi paid
agents and the solid facts of American
life seem to have taken care of those
Germans who may have had some nos-
talgic weaknesses for their dimly remem-
bered fatherland.
-"Abandon Ship" in Record Time
Nazi Sadism
On Bastille Day, July 14, the sadistic
Nazis in France pulled another trick out
of their overstuffed bag of insults and
cruelties. The Jews who are still in Paris
were ordered to remain indoors through-
out the day. Assuredly, the depressed and
hopeless Jews of France hardly felt Ike
dancing in the streets on the great day
of liberation, but they may have had
their spirits lifted if they saw some happy,
hopeful faces of their countrymen. For
despite the cruel and sad lot of the French
there must have been some who had vi-
sions and hopes of a liberated France on
their day of liberation, and their actions
and faces must have shown these visions
and hopes.
We have come to the conclusion that
there is a special corps of Nazis which
spends all of its time in thinking up
unique and unusual plans for torturing
and annoying the Jews of France.
The Jews of France, however, can be
solaced with the thought that perhaps
next Bastille Day they will not only go
into the streets, but dance wildly in the
streets with all other free Frenchmen.
