ABOUT PEOPLE:
Rumor has it that Maxim Lit-
vinov will be recalled to Russia
before long for an important do-
mestic job . . . Herman Shulman
of the Zionist Emergency Com-
mittee, a young man of imagina
tion and energy, is putting now
life into that body . . . Joseph
Brainin and Kenneth Leslie have
resigned from the Executive Coun-
cil of the Committee for a Jewish
Army . . . This in protest against
that recent irresponsible adver-
tisement on the Roumanian ''bar-
bain sale" of Jews . . : The new
book that Franz Werfel is writ-
ing will deal with life in Poland
after the Nazi invasion . . . Sho-
lom Asch's trilogy "The Three
Cities" has just been republished
in a single volume . . . If you

one . . . But hurry, as the edition
is limited to 25,000 copies . . .
When Emanuel List, the Metro-
politan Opera Company's famous
basso, was in his early teens and
confronted with the need of earn-
ing his living, he became a tailor
—and even registered an original
design for a woman's riding habit
with the Vienna Tailors' Guild.
WEEKLY GIGGLE:
Have you heard that one about
the native Nazi-lover in one of
the occupied countries? . . . This
gent has been collaborating with
the conquerors ever since Hitler's
legions marched in, and naturally
had a special detail of storm
troopers guarding him from the
wrath of his countrymen ... But
one day he rushed into the Nazi
Gauleitor's office with an urgent
request for an additional body-
guard . . . The Gauleiter was
puzzled . . . "Nobody's harmed
a hair on your head so far," he
said, "so it would seem that the
protection you already have should
be quite sufficient .
