Jewish Prisoners Call for Help

It so happens that the ques-
tion of the fate of Jewish pHs-
oners in German prison camps
has not been discussed in the
columns of the press. It is pos-
sible that in the face of the great
tragedy of Polish Jewry which
is on the brink of destruction.
the question of help for a few
hundred, or a few thousand pris-
oners, is a matter of relative
unimportance. It is also possible
that many have thought that it
is sufficient to leave the question
of help for these people to in-
ternational agencies, such as the
International Red Cross. It could
Also be that the voices of these
prisoners has not reached the
proper ears, that their cry has
not been strong enough to have
been heard, understood and acted
upon. I refer to this question
openly in the belief that particu-
larly now, when Polish Jewry is
being destroyed, the question of
help for the rest of our Jewish
brethren assumed greater signi-
ficance.
The problem of help for pris-
oners became real soon after the
defeat of Poland in September,
1939. Many thousands of the de-
feated Poles became prisoners of
the Germans. The condition of
the prisoners from the very be-
ginning was far from satisfac-
tory. In a sense the treatment

was somewhat better in the
Whigs (Offizier Lager) where the
officers were imprisoned, than in
the Stalags (Stamm Lager)
where the soldiers were interned.
According to reliable informa-
tion we had from prisoners them-
selves, as well as other sources,
each prisoner received 100 gramm
( 1 4 pound) of black bread daily,
and two servings of soup made
from hot water and a vegetable
peeling. This "food" became even
worse with the decline of living
standards in Germany and the de-
crease of • food allotments. How
long prisoners, or other human
beings, could exist on such ra-
tions is not difficult to imagine.
The life of each prisoner was
sweetened by the right to receive
food packages from the outside.
It is therefore no wonder that
early in the first months of im-
prisonment there began to flow
to the writer of these lines, as
well as to hundreds of others,
thousands of cries for help and
frantic pleas for food and cloth-
ing, for bread, butter, fats and
sugar. Together with these ap-
peals Caine labels, special labels,
enabling packages to be sent to
the writers whose names ap-
peared thereon.
In the territory of Lithuania,

Some years ago, when the
present Lord Melchet—a well
known English statesman and
Zionist leader—whose mother was
a Gentile, accepted the tenets of
our Faith in order to become a
full Jew, he made the following
declaration in the study of the
Chief Rabbi of Great Britain,
Dr. Hertz in London, who offi-
ciated at the holy ceremony:
"I accept herewith the Sanc-
tities, Sorrows and Sacrifices of
Israel." If there is a declaration
which sums up more precisely,
more forcefully and lucidly the
spiritual elements, which make
in our day and time amidst the
trials and fiery ordeal of the
present—a full Jew, it is un-
known to me.

In the brevity and classicism
of its phraseology, this utterance
deserves to be placed next to the
deathless declaration of Church-
ill in one of the most decisive
epochal moments of this world-
war, "I have nothing to bring you
but tears, toil, sweat and blood."
Indeed, there is no greater test
of what constitute a full-Jew
in our days than the acceptance
of "Israel's Sanctities, Sufferings
and Sorrows."
First: the Sanctities of Israel!
No full, loyal and wholehearted
Jew but he accepts the Eternal
Verities of Jewry, "the Kingdom
and Yoke of God," and the Way

of Life, of "Holiness, Righteous-
ness and Morality" that proceeds
from it and is the logical de-
duction of this great declaration
of Faith! The two command-
ments, "Love Thy Lord with all
thy heart, soul and might," and
"Love thy fellowman as thou
Icvest thyself" are at once the
fundaments and the spirit of our
holy Faith and all other duties
are the natural concomitments
and resultants thereof.

Second: The Sorrows of Is-
rael! No Jew in our days is a
full Jew unless he feels, shares
the sorrows and is willing to
bear the burden of Israel. Each
and every Jew must consider his
fellow-Jew in other countries and
continents as his "Other I," who
is hunted, maltreated and out-
lawed for an inquity and sin
which is common to all of us:
for having been born a Jew and
because he believes in "Echod,"
in the Oneness and Unity of
God: the Father of all mankind
and its concomitant; the Broth-
erhood of Man! Each of us must
deeply ponder and take to heart
the words of Samuel Johnson,
"that if not for the Grace of the
Lord, we would be today in the
place of our degraded fellow-
men," we would be today home-
less, stateless, sightless Jews,
