pletely to isolate the Jews from
the rest of the population.
"The stars are shining," Ber-
liners say when the Jews appear
on the scene in the afternoon at
four (shopping time for Jews is
between four and five). The life
of a Jew becomes more unbear-
able almost every day; every
week brings some new and mal'ci-
ous form of persecution. For ex-
ample, it was ruled in Berlin at
one time that Jews were forbid-

(len to make use of public tele-
phone booths, even in the Post
offices. Their telephones and ra-
dios were taken away from them
years ago. Jews aren't served in
some shops, for instance, in al-
most no hairdressers' or barber
shops; at least this order is giv-
en to the proprietors by their
local Party units. And then there
are surprise inspections: Officials
come to see whether one k. at
home at the specified times, to
inspect money, food supplies, etc.
A large fine or even concen-
tration camp is the penalty for
violating curfew regulations or
food and money restrictions. Such
"criminals" are counted as anti-
social elements and can usually
expect to be deported to the East.
Otherwise the choice of deportees
has seemed rather arbitrary anJ
with no consideration for age. At
any rate, I was lucky to live in
a so-called "Jewish house," i.e.,
a house that had been owned by
Jews up until a certain date. In
the first three to four months, de-
portation was limited, almost
without exception, to Jews who
lived in "Aryan houses." Why
this regulation was made is a
mystery to me, as there had been
no Jewish ownership of houses for
a long time.
You are probably informed
about food rations. Jews cannot
buy: Fish (but I often got more
than I could use from Aryan
friends and could give some to
others) ; Smoked foods (I was al-
ways given enough for my own
uses); so-called scarce goods
could not be sold to Jews. Never-
theless, I suffered no lack, besides
I was on good terms with the
baker, the butcher, and the groc-
er. In the last year I was in-
vited to meals three of four
times a week by dear, good (Ary-
an) friends, an elderly lady and
her daughter. I could come and
go in their home as I chose and
again and again they gave me.

over me in every conceivable
way. These two ladies and my
friend, N. (all Aryans) greatly
strengthened my resolve to flee.
I was able to leave all my pos-
sessions with them as well as
many valuable things belonging
to friends. There were other Ary-
ans who often invited me to
hearty meals, a lovely couple
whom I had come to know by ac-
cident last summer in the coun-
try. She is an actress, he a pro-
fessional man, both are semito-
philes and there are many like
them in Berlin today. I was aston-
ished that these people knew ex-
actly—and better than I — the
circumstances and the adversi-
ties of the Jewish community and
all the terrible things that were
done to Jews. It is regrettable
that these horrors are known very
litle among non-Jews. That fact
was confirmed for me repeatedly,
for example with N., who kept
up his friendship with me. But,
when we talked politics, we fre-
quently got in each others' hair,
because he would always seem
to distort the facts. Even the
special ordinances and exception-
al laws governing Jewish people
are not published in the regular
press, only in the Jewish news-
paper.
Much could be written about
morale in Germany, and yet noth-
ing certain, besides, I have al-
ready been away too long. When
I left, public opinion was very
pessimistic; it always wavered,
depending on successes or fail-
ures of the Nazis. Entuhsiams is
not and certainly never was pres-
ent, not even during the time of
the greatest victories. A very
large part of the population —
how high the percentage is, is
hard to say—long since stopped
believing that Germany would win
the war. The public is pretty
well informed about the present
situation on the various fronts,
since, according to my estimate,
eighty to ninety percent of all
radio owners listen to the for-
eign stations, in spite of the
threat of grave prison sentences.
The opposition to the regime is
certainly great in all circles, but
any move is rigidly suppressed.
Still one hears, now and again,
of little revolts, even mutinies
often resulting in violence, Of
course the craziest rumors are
told around, you can't find out
what is true in them. For ex-
ample, I heard, on good evidence,
that the large factories were be-
ing stocked with machine guns
in case of trouble. In the morn-
ings the Nazis very often find
very frank notes chalked and
pasted in public places. Grumbling
is much worse in some sections,

for instance in Bavaria; especial
ly in Munich, the people air their
grievances freely. They say that
the Heil Hitler greeting is seldom
heard there nowadays, nor often
in Berlin for that matter. Any-
way, the German people have
their fill of the war.
Postscript, dated Aug. 25, 1942.
In the meantime, as everyone
hears, public sentiment in Ger-
many has grown much worse, in
spite of new victories in Russia.
The food problem has, from all
reports, become far more seri-
ous. The situation for the Jews
is becoming more and more ca-
tastrophic; by now probably all
have been deported. Practically
nothing is known of their fate,
since no news of it is coming
through.
