to produce the David to destroy
the new Goliath.
Boy: Begins to laugh strange-
ly). Oh, that's good. That's very
good indeed! And if you'll show
me where . . . (Stops laughing).
I'm going to enlist!
Hall: I'll show you where.
What's so funny, though?
Boy: Nothing . . . I
.
shouldn't laugh . . . because .. .
(Stops). Tell me—what's your
name?
Hal: Halevy, Sergeant Saul
Halevy.
Boy: Well, mine is Newman.
David Newman.
Hal: (Pause) Hmmm. Coinci-
dence. Well, David . . . let's walk
over to the lead tank, I'll drop
you at an enlistment post.

Music': Begin, background.
Hal: One of these days I'll be
driving by for you. You'll have
your chance to prove that we're
strong . . . to fight beside your
people . . . beside millions of de-
cent, God-fearing, freedom-loving
men; the enemy won't have a
chance, because you'll be fighting
for a Homeland ... for your very
soul and the dignity of Man—;
they'll only be fighting for their
lives. I'll be coming back for you,
David, and when I do, I'll have
the smoothest, deadliest stone for
your sling you ever could wish
for. (Pause) Come on. I'll sign
you up.
Music: Swells a little: Then
down behind in `Hatikah'.
Narr: Across the desert sands
where Goliath had fallen, the two
men strode to where the war ma-
chines drank their fill of new-
found water. The hatch on the
first tank clanged shut upon them.
Sound: Clang of heavy steel
hatch.
Narr: The engines started.
Sound: Powerful start and
beat of engines.
Narr: Then the tanks spun
on their tracks and thundered
across the sand. For a moment
the iron caravan silhouetted on
the ridge—and for a moment,
the Stars of David painted on
their armor blazed in the slant-
ing sunlight. Then the tanks sank
behind the ridge and roared into
the west . . . where the enemy
crouched. In the still desert air,
the clangor of the machines was
like the clangor of an ancient
giant, stricken, and falling in his
armor . . . never to rise again
from the sands of Gath!
Music (Hatikvah up strong and
inspiringly to finish.)

forces, and gave a course in
malaria field work and diagnosis
to a group of doctors. Jointly
with the Department of Parasi-
tology courses in Tropical Medi-
cine were given to British Medi-
cal Corps personnel. Recently ar-
rangements have been made to
train a dozen malaria workers
for the American forces and to
give courses in Tropical Medi-
cine to the Medical Officers of
the service. At the Hadassah Uni-
versity hospital, clinical confer-
ences are held at regular inter-
vals which are always well at-
tended by army doctors.
The university is also serving
the war effort through the stu-
dents which it trained. Many of
the students, several hundreds
of them, serve in the army with
the combatant forces. A number
of them, however, are using the
special skills which they acquired
at the university. At least seven
students are working in army
hospitals as bacteriologists, one !si
a chemist in the censorship. Re-
cently half a dozen geologists
were requested for the army
survey services. About a dozen
graduates of the Department of
Hygiene have been taken on as
malaria inspectors by the Amer-
ican Medical Corps. Several of
our students have been enlisted
as special interpreters with var-
ious branches of the service.
They are probably others un-
known to the writer.
The graduates of the Chemis-
try Department are doing valu-
able work in their specific field.
More than a dozen are engaged
in research on problems referred
to the Chemistry Departments by
the Scientfiic Advisory Commit-
tee. A number of them have
formed a cooperative laboratory
which is producing pure chemical
reagents difficult to obtain front
abroad. Others are employed in
the growing chemical and pharm-
aceutic industries which are now
chiefly engaged in war work.
Thus in Palestine as in the
United States the scientifically
trained men and women are fully
engaged directly or indirectly in
war work. This recognition of
their special usefulness has come
somewhat late. But from the
very outset the agency which
was active in promoting enlist-
ments agreed with the university
authorities to grant deferment
to students in physics, chemistry
and bacteriology to allow them
to finish their studies. Now, the
wisdom of this act is realized.
In fact, we have now conic to a
stage where the shortage in
trained men is being felt.
The Hebrew University has
stood the test. It has proven its
importance both as a teaching
and as a scientific institution. It
has won for Palestine the recog-
nition as the scientific center of
the Near East. It is doing basic
work which will advance Pal-
estine industry during and after
the war. It is training the men
to do the work in the factory, in
the laboratories or wherever the'
may be needed.
