Sound: Distant drill-engine.
Nan.: Except for the sound
of the machinery there is com-
plete silence as the last, tense
moments of drilling comes to a
close. Standing apart from the
rest of the group in a young
man, watching the proceedings
W • th disillusioned eyes. Then,
quietly, another, older man comes
up lain(' him. He wears a Brit-
ish Sergeant's uniform. He speaks
suddenly . . .
Sound: Drill engine stops.
Hal: They've stopped drilling.
Looks as though they're ready to
start pumping. The big moment,
eh?
Boy: (Flusteml: Bewildered).
I don't know. Is that important?
Mal: Important?
I can see
that you're new here.
Do you
know what that water means to
them? They're bringing back to
life the soil that has been dead
for centuries. Yes, that same land
that caused malaria and death—
that land will now blossom as in
the days of the Bible. It will bring
forth fruit and food and, on the
very spot where we stand now,
fields of corn and wheat will
come to bend to the wind and the
rain. Yes, I can tell you of many
who have given their lives to
bring water out of the hard rocky
soil. For it is the symbol of the
new life that the refugees who
have come before you, the men
and women who once languished in
concentration camps, are building.
Boy: But what's the use? The
Nazi monster is going to destroy
all of us. What are you doing in
the war? What's water got to do
with fighting the Nazis?
Hal: I'm afraid you're still
suffering from the shock. I under-
stand. I've seen lots of fellows

mules and their bare hands; they
carted them back to Tel Aviv for
our men and women to rebtfld.
I'm running them hack to Suez
. . to fight one our side, now.
20,000 of our I>oys are in the
fighting ranks, a small number,
but one of the largest propor-
tions of any group in the United
Nations. Their dead are honored
in the memory of Dunkirk and
Crete and Libya. These very same
men built the fortifications at El
Alamein, where our own soldiers
are making a stand today. And
our Jewish women are in the
army, too. These Jews want peace
and freedom. But they're tough
enough to carry on this war to a
finish. They came to Palestine to
build freedom for themselves and
to help preserve freedom for the
world.
Boy: Look at those tanks!
Hal: Just stopping for that
water you thought didn't really
matter.
Boy: But look at them! The
Shield of David is painted on
their sides!
Hal: Yes. We took those
tanks; they're ours to take into
battle, with the Shield of David
painted on them; the Nazis re-
spect that emblem in the field;
they don't grind it into the (lust
out here. In fact . . . we do
some grinding of our own. The
Shield of David is painted on the
metal plates from which Nazi
prisoners eat in Palestine intern-
ment camps. That shield is a curse
and a mockery today in the
ghettos and the concentration
camps that cover Europe like a
plague. But it will once again be
the symbol of freedom—freedom
which Jews, together with all hu-
manity, will win when these
forces whom we are fighting are
beaten back as Goliath was, right
here in this land.
Boy: We will do that?
Hal: Why not? , After all
David killed the giant Goliath
here. Haven't you ever read the
Bible? Don't you remember the
prophecy that in the Valley of
Esdrealon, on the plain of Arma-
geddon, mighty forces will strug-
gle for victory—that the forces
of evil will here face the forces
of justice? Maybe in this land
we will witness the historic tri-
umph of the cause of our United
Nations. (Pause) And, Pll tell
you something else! It's up to us

like you in their first weeks here.
That spiritual shellshock of the
concentration camp is pretty bad
at first. But you'll get over it. The
very water that we have just dis-
covered will wash the wounds
away. By the way, I saw what
you (lid back there on the slope.
Boy: What I did?
Hal: Is this yellow cloth badge
yours?
Boy: (Angry). Where did you
get that?
Hal: I saw you take it out of
your pocket and trample it in the
sand back there. Don't you know
that emblem is the Shield of
David, boy. That's the star our
people have followed for centuries.
‘Ve're not in the habit here of
grinding it into the earth. We're
proud of it.
Bob: But I don't understand.
The Nazis make us wear it as a
badge of shame. How can we, a
small people, fight them?
Hal: You're on a battlefield
right here. The Jews are fight-
ing on every front. Why, the food
that is being raised in settlements
built by the United Palestine Ap-
peal can save that much more
transport space for guns and
planes. We're making war goods
here, too. Yes, the scientists and
technicians whom Hitler kicked
out of Germany are working for
the United Nations in our fac-
tories. Look around you and see
what your fellow-Jews have done.
See the new homeland they have
built with the help of the United
Palestine Appeal. And that isn"t
all! Not by a ... (Breaks off).
Look.
Boy: What's the matter?
Hal: Water. They've brought
in fresh water. (Low). Praise be
to God.
Boy: Water. Yes. But the war
will be won by blood, sweat and
tears.
Hal: I was just coming to
that. Everything counts.
Sound: Sound of tank engines
and tanks, approaching from a
distance.
Boy: Listen
Hal: What?
Boy: Those engines — that
nose.
Hal: Ah, tanks most likely.
Boy: Yes . . . there they come
over the bridge. (Pause). They're
Nazis!
Hal: (Calmly assured). Oh,
no.
Boy: I've seen hundreds of
them in our streets, hack home.
I tell you those are Nazi tanks!
Hal: Not any more. Some of
our boys took them away from
General Rommel.
Boy: Some of our boys?
Hal: Yes . . . I told you I
was coming to that . .. Palestine
