The Hebrew University In Wartime
The soundness of an institu-
tion is often attested by its
serviceability in times of crises.
Measured by this criterion the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem
has proven an essential and
deeply-rooted seat of learning.
It served the Jewish people in
their need before the war, when
the wave of Hitlerism which
swept most of the countries of

Europe shut the doors of univer-
sities to Jewish students. It is
serving Palestine and the United
Nations in their needs now, that
the cruel war calls for the maxi-
mum exploitation of available
resources human and material.
When the Hebrew University
was established in 1925 skeptics
shrugged their shoulders. Why
a university, in a country hav-
ing only 150,000 Jews? Why
spend money on university edu-
cation in a country whose needs
for elementary and secondary
education have not yet been met?
And the sponsors of the univer-
sity took refuge in the assur-
ance that the university would
be primarily a seat of research
and that no teaching was con-
templated.
By 1928 pressure from a
growing population forced the
then young university, devoted
solely to research, to open its
doors to students. Formal teach-
ing was begun in the Humani-
ties and a Faculty of Arts called
into being. The relatively rapid
growth of the university under
the devoted leadership of Dr.
Magnes also made possible the
initiation of teaching by the
School of Biology in 1932 and
the organization of a Faculty
of Science in 1933. At that time,
research was still the primary
function of the university, since
teaching occupied only part of
the time of the Scientific Staff.
Then came Hitler and Hitler-
ism. Successively, German, Po-
lish and Italian schools shut their
doors to Jewish students. Appli-
cants from various countries
clamored for admission to the
one institution of higher learn-
ing on which Jewish students
had a claim. And the skeptics no
longer raised their eyebrows or
shrugged their shoulders. Limited
though the staff, facilities and
means were, the university
opened • its doors to all who
qualified, straining its capacity
