DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle

Detroit Jewish Chronicle

A New Wrinkle

and THE LEGAL CHRONICLE
Published Weekly by Jewish Chronicle Publishing Co., Inc.

Joseph Goebbels, Minister of propa-
ganda and enlightenment now informs the
German people through the columns of
his paper, Das Reich, that if they lose the
war the United Nations will remove their
children to foreign lands, and enslave
them for twenty-five years.
This is a new wrinkle in Nazi propo-
ganda. The old threats have apparently
lost their effectiveness, so he tries out a
new one, hoping that it will act as the
necessary stimulus to keep up morale and
increase production.
It is good psychology for we know that
fathers and mothers who may not have
much enthusiasm and zest for living will
make many sacrifices, and endure hard-
ships for their children.
The United Nations must be ever on the
alert and must be prepared to counter-
act the shrewd and subtle propaganda
of Goebbels.
This can only be counteracted by clear
and definite statements by responsible
spokesmen for the United Nations that
they do not contemplate any punishment
for the bedeviled, despairing, duped
peoples of the Reich, and that such in-
famous and brutal treatment of children
was never even imagined.
The United Nations must go even fur-
ther. They must assure the peoples of
Germany that they will be part of the
European Community of Nations. This
community of nations must be patterned
after the United States of America if the
caste of Prussian militarism and junker-
ism is to come to an end.
Millions of Germans know that Prus-
sian militarism and junkerism is a plague,
for which they have not yet found a cure.
There is a cure for this malignancy, and
that is simply the removal of the virus
and bacteria, which is the belief that only
by force and violence can Germany have
her proper place in a new Europe.
If and when a United States of Europe
becomes an actuality will the miltarists
and junkers find the very foundation of
their caste removed and destroyed.
Those who believe that a peace can be
made with the General Staff are suffering
from pernicious illusions. This lesson
should have been thoroughly learned
when the Kaiser abdicated but the gen-
erals remained.
The same catastrophic experience will
be repeated if Hitler is removed and the
generals remain.
For the peace of Europe and the secur-
ity of the German people and the rest of
the world it is imperative that Prussian
militarism be ended once and for all.

Laval Wants A Scapegoat

I

Pierre Laval now promises that he will
not separate Jewish children from their
parents but that the whole family will be
deported together. This is a magnanimous
concession coming from anybody tainted
with Nazi association.
This concession was made by him only
after the strongest protestation had been
made by Pope Pius XII. Secretary of
State Cordell Hull and countless other
humanitarians.
Despite his weakening Laval has not
yet ordered the release of Father Chaillet
who has repeatedly denounced the Vichy
government for the unconscionable depor-
tation of Jews to Nazi slave camps in
Eastern Europe.
The answer of Laval to the protests
is rather interesting. According to 'Radio
Vichy they now discover that the Jews
are responsible for the defeat of France.
It is hardly credible that Laval and
his camarilla expect the French people
to accept such absurdities, especially af-
ter the fiasco of the trial of Blum, Dala-
dier, Gamelin, Mandel, and others, but this
is no doubt a trial balloon to learn, if pos-
sible, what support he has among the
French people. The old technique of find-
ing a scapegoat has worked well in other
instances so why not try it in France.
The people are weary, dejected, hungry
and hopeless.
The German masses under similarly
psychologized bit at the bait and in fact
large numbers swallowed the scapegoat
propaganda hook, line and sinker.
If Laval were a knight in shining armor
he may hope to appeal to the Savior-seek-
ing French people, but instead is a tar-
nished, traitorous, self-seeker in the em-
ploy of the Nazis.
Such an individual could hardly hope
to arouse the masses of people behind
him. But he and his gang have probably
decided that nothing can be lost and per-
haps this is the way to success.
If we are to judge of his success by the
amount of opposition and protest we may
feel reasonably certain that his first ex-
periment in scapegoat propaganda has
been a complete failure.
We are equally hopeful that the con-
scription of French workers will fail as
utterly as the scapegoat propaganda has
failed.
4
Laval is trying to hold on to his job.
His master Hitler will only continue to
keep him in power as long as he gets
results.
There are even bigger and better be-
trayers and lick spittles in France than
Laval and they are just waiting for the
opportunity to fill Laval's shoes more bru-
tally than he has to-date.
The temper of the French people will
boil over if and when they are persuaded
that Hitler's victory is impossible. When
they do all the Darlans, Lavals, Doriots
and their like will lose all their influence,
authority and power in France.
This day may soon dawn. It is the earn-
est wish of all our people at the beginning
of the new year that this will be the last
time that any puppet or ruler will at-
tempt to load the guilt of war or its fail-
ure upon their overburdened, innocent
shoulders.

No Martyrs

Attorney General Francis Biddle has
not made a single martyr. This is a splend-
id and praiseworthy record and proves
that the subversive and obstructionist ele-
ments in America can be dealt with. with-
out creating a feeling of resentment, un-
fairness and injustice upon the part of
those who are anxious to find fault or
those whose sympathies are aroused
whenever any one is made a martyr.
We may be sure that many of the psy-
chopaths and exhibitionist racketeers, and
very much disappointed and chagrined
that they have not emerged as crucified
martyrs.
It would have inflated their egos if
even a small segment of the population
would have raised the hue and cry that
they were framed. railroaded and un-
fairly tried.
Mr. Biddle no doubt knows this and he
gave these sowers of discord ; spreaders
of hate ; profiteers of anti-Semitism no op-
portunity to pose as victims of injustice
and hysteria.
Mr. Biddle has done the nation a great
service. He could not be stampeded into
action by the impatience and insistence of
overzealous, altho well meaning men and
women who wanted summary and not
constitutional action and procedure.
Had he done otherwise we may today
have plague spots of dissatisfaction and re-
sentment. We may have larger numbers of
our people complaining that we are
using Nazi and Fascist methods to get rid
of our dissidents.
He has demonstrated that a p •ople
knowing that its cause is just can be air
even to the enemies in its midst.
The Christians, Pelleys and Vierecks , re
already forgotten by the American peop e.
It would have been otherwise had ve
made martyrs of them.
