Officers and Men of Battleship Massachusetts
Recipient of Year's Subscriptions to 168 Magazines
And Equipment for Ship's Band from Boston Lodge

BOSTON. — Sailors serving
on the U. S. S. Massachusetts,
newst and largest American bat-
tleship, will have good cause to
remember the name of Bnai
Brith as the result of a unique
project just completed by Amos
Lodge, following a poll of the
crew taken by ship's Captain F. E.
Whiting; Chaplain J. F. Moody;
and Lt. Comm. C. A. Paul, note-
ale officer of the First Naval
District ; to determine what in
the way of recreational material
the men would most appreciate.
Current magazines and musi-
cal instruments for the ship's
band stood highest in the list.
Without delay, Antos Lodge
bought one-year subscriptions to
168 of the magazines selected in
the poll and ordered them mailed
to the U. S. S. Massachusetts,
wherever she may be. With each
magazine, the lodge furnished
covers containing the name of
the magazine, the ship and
"Amos Lodge, Bnai Brith, Bos-
ton, Massachusetts," inscribed on
the covers. Subscriptions to Bos-
ton and New York newspapers
were also ordered.
In a case of the musical in-
struments. which are doubly pre...-.
ions on hoard a warship in time
of war because radios are for-
bidden, movies are not possible

building activities must be self-
generated, Amos Lodge met with
the ship's bandmaster who sub-
mitted it list of the instruments
needed to fit out the band. The
total was 43 pieces, including
mutes, stands, etc. These were
all provided through the efforts
of Max Ulin and Charles Van.
Amos Lodge also furnished or-
chestrations and had engraved
On each piece of equipment the
name of the ship and Bnai Brith.
Like inscriptions were painted
on the bass drum sold the cover
of the bull fiddle. Magazines
and instruments cost the lodge
over $1500.
To climax- this unique Bnai
Brith effort, through which Am();
Lodge has adopted the U.S.S.
Massachusetts for the duration,
the lodge also sponsored a dance
for 500 officers and men of the
ship, with Bnai Brith furnishing.
500 dancing partners and the
Elks making their ballroom
available through Mr. Ulin, who
is both a Ben Brith and granl
exalted ruler of the Elks.
In a letter to Mr. Ulin, Cap-
tain Whiting expressed his "grat-
itude" for Bnai Brith's "excep-
tional generosity to the men of
my command." "When you of-
fered to donate the magazines
and folders," said Captain Whit-
ing, "I was very pleased, for I
know how men like to keep
informed on current reading dur-
ing long periods at sea. When
you went further, and donated
the instruments, music and other
material for the ship's orches-
tra, I felt that I was more deep-
ly indebted. This gift, too, will
have a beneficial effect on the
morale of my men . . . May I
express the hope that the Lodg
will meet with success in all
its undertakings, and will be re-
warded for its interest in the
men of our armed services."
Writing to Frank Goldman,
of Lowell, Mass., national Bnai
Brith vice president, 1,ieut. Cont.
Paul said "the recent activity of
the Amos Lodge of Bnai Brith
is a striking example of what
can be done in a creative way
