unrest with propaganda against
the Jews. But more awareness
of these diabolic efforts must be
shown by Negro leaders them-
selves, many of whom have re-
mained unenlightened as to the
forces behind numerous efforts to
create schisms in thv Negro com-
munity.
The Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith, through the spoken
and written word, is working
closely with Negro groups, and
reports satisfactory progress in
this field. Through increasing col-
laboration in the improvement of
Negro-Jewish relations, especially
as these occur in the rental and
commercial fields, we hope to do
such of a constructive nature
which will reduce areas of fric-
tion between the two minorities
and thus balk efforts to rouse
racial prejudice between the two
groups.
Government prosecution of na-
tional enemies who happen also
to be enemies of the Jewish peo-
ple, while gratifying, nevertheeless
is not the prime answer to the
problem of combatting anti-Semi-
tism. Too many other elements,
tangible and intangible, enter into
the complicated picture of anti-
racial and anti-religious agitation,
to permit of easy acquiescence to
tne claims of some that "our
problems are solved now!" What
of our planning for the post-war
period? Wnat of the tremendous
and unparalleled problems—chief-
ly economic—which will bedevil
our nation after our victory over
Axis aggressors?
We know now, from bitter ex-
perience, that war breeds ugly
passions and prejudice. But we
need not be disneartened, nor suc-
cumb to a mood of cynicism or
uespair—for today there are
nuglity voices raised on behalf of
interfaith and interracial under-
standing, and the blind chauvin-
ism winch afflicted so many in
tne first world war is lacking
today. In its stead is a desire
for more—not less—democracy on
tne part of many of our leading
statesmen, clergymen and publi-
cists. We who are engaged in
Jewish defense activities now find
that reasonable men and women
are aware that the Jew for nine
long years has been used as a
wnipping-boy by the totalitarians,
utilized to cover up the Axis
plans for sweeping world domin-
ion. Jewish voices which were not
heeded in the mid-'30s today are
respected, for theirs are the voices
of experience, the lash of Naziism
having first fallen upon our min-
ority.
At the dawn of a new year,
with the world locked in mortal
combat with the beast that is
Nazi-Fascism, there is much to
be thankful for despite tne agon-
ies, doubts, despairs and setbacks
of the past year. The position of
the Jewish people in America is
more secure, thanks to the exposes
of the vicious intriguers and
propagandists utilized by Hitler to
spread his doctrines of the super-
race—now badly battered by the
common sense of the peoples of
the United Nations.
The power of contrast between
free institutions and tyranny has
mobilized vast forces in defense
of true democracy. Though the
way may appear to be long and
difficult, there is good reason to
believe that America shall emerge
from her trial purified and
strengthened. Surely the prophetic
voices now raised, the universal
sympathy and fellowship which
the mighty menace has evoked,
augur for more penetrating- un-
derstanding of common human
needs and common human destiny
in the years to come. Because the
championship of decency is cour-
ageous. because the voices speak-
ing for social justice are clearion
clear because the lovers of free-
dom ale aroused to preserve their
freedoms, because the spirit of
our ancient faith seeking to
spread the peace of life and of
security is now being implement-
ed in the heroic drama which

Switzerland Modifies
Decision to Expel
Escaped Refugees

BERNE (WNS)—The storm of
protests which greeted the deci-
sion of the Swiss Federal Gov-
ernment to expel all refugees,
most of them Jews, who entered
this country illegally since Aug.
11 after escaping from France,
resulted this week in a modifica-
tion of the expulsion order.
Accused by the liberal press
of "violating the obligation of
Christian neighborly love and the
humanitarian duty of Switzer-
land "to accept the refugees and
grant them asylum, Swiss police
officials announced the suspen-
sion of the expulsion order after
a meeting in Zurich with repre-
sentatives of Jewish refugee or-
ganizations.
Swiss officials stated that ref-
ugees who entered Switzerland
after Aug. 11 and who announced
themselves to the police on ar-
rival, would not be expelled with-
out cause.
