ently cannot prevail against the
genius of a handful of the adver-
tising brains of America. Herr
Hitler has learned, at considerable
cost, the fallacy of his widely
vaunted concept that the more
stupendous the lie, the more read-
ily will it be believed by the
gullible masses. American educa-
tional methods have demonstrated,
it would seem to be certain, that
the power of the truth, properly
presented, will still crush the
power of the lie. This, however,
must not lead us into over-confi-
dence, for that which is some-
times lacking in skill may find
an unmerited acceptance because
of volume.
Quite naturally, the fifth col-
umn which still operates here
will not miss a trick in turning
everything to their advantage.
When the drive for scrap rubber
was at its height, the whisper
promptly circulated that the drive
would rebound primarily to the
benefits of Jewish commercial in-
terests. The parents of soldiers
and sailors killed or wounded in
action have received anonymous
letters stating that were it not
for the "fact" that the "Jews
started this war," he dead or
wounded loved ones would still
be safe in their homes.
Quite the most prevalent can-
ard concerning the Jews and the
war effort—one which has turned
up in scores of cities—is the base-
less allegation that Jewish men
are not serving in the armed
forces in proportion to their num-
bers. Though the records prove
the contrary, this charge is made
repeatedly and keeps the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai Brith
busy, both in giving the facts
about such charges and in antici-
pating the canard so that the
seeds of hate thus sown by propa-
gandists will fall on infertile soil,
thanks to our preventive efforts.
Our British allies inevitably
come in for a drubbing at the
hands of the propagandists, espe-
cially after any land battle or
sea engagement which resulted in
a retreat or other disadvantage
to our ally. The professional co-
terie of British-haters ties in the
Jews very nicely with the Brit-
ish setbacks, asserting that only
the influence of the Jews has
kept a gutted, worn-out Britain
fighting long after she should
have acknowledged the superiority
of German arms. Very clever—
but the propaganda of this type
has become threadbare, and it
now accomplishes little.
Every minor shift in public
thinking opens a new front for
Axis attempts at division. Already

If lasting national unity is to
be achieved, large strides forward
in the alleviation of the Negro's
economic plight and exaggerated
social prejudice against him must
be made. While this is not our
special responsibility, we never-
theless have a deep interest in
their welfare; for savage on-
slaught against the colored minor-
ity—horrible in itself—is rendered
doubly dangerous because of the
likelihood of such hate affecting
all m'norities in American life.
Responsible leaders in govern-
ment, education and religion are

unrest sweeping through the col-
order ranks, and are cognizant

IRA WEIL JEFFERY

The late Ensign Ira W , 2i1
Jeffery, who died in action at
Pearl Harbor and for whom the
new Ira Weil Jeffery Bnai Brith
Lodge in Minneapolis was recent-
1 3' named, is now to be honored
by the United States Navy which
plans to name an escort vessel
of the destroyer type after him.
So far as is known, the U.S.S.
Jeffery will be the first naval
vessel in American history to be
named after a Jew,

perceptible is the dangerous tech-
nique under force and growth,
to the effect that Jews are block-
ing a negotiated peace. It is al-
leged in many quarters that Japan
attacked, therefore she must be
destroyed. However, say the
agents of appeasement, we have
no quarrel with Hitler or the Ger-
man people. We have forced hos-
tilities and there should be imme-
diate peace with Germany, this
enabling us to prosecute our was
against Japan without diffusion
of our forces. To create a wider
reception for this thesis, it is
charged that Jews are blocking a
negotiated peace. The agencies
utilizing this charge know well
that those familiar with Axis
methods, those who know its du-
plicity and its double-dealing, re-
ject any temporizing with the
forces of evil. Yet these agents
of discontent suspect that if the
public can be made to believe that
Jews fear a negotiated peace and
endeavor to block even a discus-
sion of it, such linking of Jews
with opposition to a false peace
will lead some of the public to
desire it. This is a clever tech-
nique, but every true American
will strive to have his country-
men elude this Nazi trap.
Articles appearing in the for-
eign-language press leave much
to be desired. Though generally
avoiding open sympathy with the
Axis, there is a ntable lack of
articles espousing American de-
mocracy in some sections of the
foreign-language press, chiefly in
the German papers. Democratic
groups are making progress in
getting German-tongue papers to
bring home to their readers the
real meaning. of American democ-
racy, but this is a job which is
never-ending and one which re-
quires constant vigilance.
A m o n g Negroes, anti-Jewish
agitation has made a marked ad-
vance in the past year. Certainn
corrective measures have been
undertaken and bid fair to effect
a better understanding betwen
these two minority groups. We
have evidence that Negroes in
various cities are being skillfully
propagandized to favor the Axis
by spokesmen sympathetic to Nazi
Germany and to Japan. During
the summer, weekly rallies of col-
ored audiences were held, and
inflammatory speeches of a pro-
Nazi and pro-Jap tone were made.
The audiences were told repeat-
edly that an Axis victory would
ensure the creation of a great
Negro empire in Africa, fully
equipped with submarines, battle-
ships and airplanes to do battle
with the white race. Obviously,
Axis divisionists have subsidized
some colored spokesmen to put
over this farcical but menacing
propaganda line.
In the Negro press, mounting
dissatisfaction with the Negro's
statute in the war effort has led
to numerous editorials and arti-
cles reflecting upon the Jewish
people. It is gratifying to report
that most cordial relationships
have been established with influ-
ential colored editors, and they
are being informed about the
background of many of the anti-
Jewish charges which they ac-
cepted, at first blush, as factual,
