A Happy New Year to All Our Jewish Friends

The year 5703 is going to be a war year. Even if
by a miracle the military hostilities shall actually come
to an end, the war aftermath will persist.
One of the painful discoveries we made during the
past year is that a nation must carry on war against
enemies at home as well as against enemies abroad.
The home front is of a special interest to us as Jews.
We may count on our Jewish 'men being represented in
the armed forces in numbers which exceed our ratio
of the population. Nevertheless, the native Fascist threat
against us continues. We are sharply reminded of this
fact on the eve of the New Year because we know that
in the Fall elections, men will be candidates for office
whose platform and purposes are openly or subtly anti-
American, Fascist, and anti-Semitic. The Fascist threat to
the American way of life is present in many and varied
forms.
This is a year, therefore when we Jews must be uni-
fied for vigilance and for action against the hidden and
the open home-front enemy. Fortunately, or perhaps one
should say inevitably, the enemy of the Jew is also the
enemy of America, of democracy, and of human freedom.
Therefore in our struggle against the home-front Fascists
we have as our allies all Americans who love the Ameri-
can tradition of liberty. Nevertheless, experience has
taught us that we cannot rely upon others to take the
initiative in fighting our battles. My message to the Jews
of Detroit is, that we must discipline ourselves as Jews to
act unitedly lest the American victory on the foreign front
be accompanied by a defeat for freedom on the home
front, and lest the glory of the victory on the war front
be marred by defeat on the peace front. With this deter-
mination that we shall contribute to a complete triumph
of the free spirit of man on all fronts, we may confidently
face the new year.

WAR TO ESTATBLISH FREEDOM FOR
ALL PEOPLE

By JESSE JONES
Secretary of Commerce

President Roosevelt and other national leaders have
told us that the United States is fighting this war to estab-
lish freeom for all people.
This should be a particularly welcome thought to
members of the Jewish faith whose sufferings have been
tremendous and prolonged under the tyranny of the dic-
tator .
It is the hope of all that we may soon herald the
EXTENDS TO ALL JEWRY damn of a new day, as well as a new year, for all of those
who have been so harshly treated.
