TEL AVIV (Palcor) — Many
cases have occurred, according to
a report of the Central Jewish
Soldiers' Welfare Committee, in
which families which have sent
gift arcels to Jewish troops on
active service in the Middle East
have been able to establish more
personal ties with the recipients.
A Jewish soldier in the British
Army who came up on leave told
how he had received a parcel
while in the hospital, in fact, it
was the first thing given him
after he had recovered conscious-
ness and was able to sit up after
a serious wound. Inside the par-
eel was a note from a family
in Jerusalem, and when in Pales-
tine he visited them in order to
thank them and to say how de-
lighted he had been to get this
souvenir from Eretz Israel. Ile
was particularly pleased with a
letter from a little girl, the age
of his own little son, and he had
brought her a present.

Of BNA I MOSHE SYNAGOGUE
A world conflagration rages; the foundations of the
earth shake; bloodshed and agony fill the universe. A
New Year dawns, and with it hope springs eternal in the
human breast—a hope which carries light for those who
walk in darkness; a hope pregnant with undying faith,
that out of the fiery furnace of affiction there shall arise
a new world, free from enmity, in which men and nations,
may live in peace.
By what means shall this hope be realized? By what
alchemy of the soul shall this faith be transformed in
social reality? The answer to these questions can be given
if one comprehends the central theme of the holy days-
TESHUVA-REPENTANCE.
Repentance has forever been the means of spiritual
regeneration. A recognition of sin is the prerequisite
of conquering sin. A forthrightness of character which
enables the individual, by self-introspection, to detect
and eradicate those flaws of the soul, is the sine qua non
of spiritual progress. "For the sins which we have com-
mitted before thee" is the refrain which predominates in
the liturgy of the High Holidays. Not merely a verbal
expression of our moral und ethical shortcomings, but
nothing less than an inner spiritual revolution, a crisis of
conscience, must take place before repentance is
achieved.
Repentance is self-criticism. It is easy to find fault
with man and God; it is difficult to censor oneself. This
is true, not only of the individual, but of society as well.
Looking for external causes as reasons for our social
maladies, is a hopless method of solving our problems.
What we must be able to learn is to search our hearts
in order to find the cause of the moral decay of our age;
to grapple not with symptoms, but to destroy the roots
of evil by probing the depths of conscience. We must be
able to admit that the violent upheavals of contemporary
history are the reactions of our own doings.
The times cry out for Teshuva, repentance; a return
to the fundamental condition .upon which a progressive
humanity can be built. What is that condition? The
recognition of the sanctity of the human being, through
faith in God!
Only when men have faith in God shall they be able
to have faith in men. Only when men shall recognize a
Law, a Torah, which is not man-made, can we expect
men to live as brothers. Sociological, technological and
scientific progress when not coupled with faith in God,
become agencies of destruction.
We, of this generation, have by our cynicism, by our
worship of false idols—be they of power or wealth; by
our emphasis upon the material comforts of an "olam
haze," rather than sacrificing in order to lay the founda-
tions of a better and saner "olam habah" have descended
to the valley of death in which we now find ourselves.
We have been busy with self-preservation but we have
lost the Self in the struggle.
Our faithlessness has bred hypocricy. We spoke of
democracy, yet we did not possess the will or courage to
carry through that philosophy to its logical conclusions.
We prattled of freedom of speech and press only to mis-
use these precious gifts to give voice to ego and not to
conscience. Our fathers fought and bled for freedom
of religion, which we have distorted into freedom from
religion. They fought for the separation of religion from
the state, and rightly so, but we interpreted it to mean
that our statesman could be divorced from religious and
moral discipline. We fashioned our gods in our own
image an commanded them to fulfill our own selfish be-
hests.
Our synagogues and churches have become dying
monuments of where once were heard the strains of a
living faith. The satisfaction of our physical appetites
was paramount even to answering the call of our soul;
forgetting that men do not live by bread alone. The
simple faith of our forefathers, the concepts of Mitzvah
and religious obligation, became outmoded in the com-
plex, artificial pattern of life in which we live. We
thought that God and Satan could be appeased simul-
taneously and that a halfway faith would suffice, for-
getting that our God was a Jealous God, demanding
full allegiance—without compromise, or not exacting
retribution.
Repentance means returning to a modus vivendi
previously experienced—a state of existence which is
nobler than the one in which the individual finds him-
self at present. Teshuva means, given alternatives the
individual chooses right from wrong; good from evil;
holy from profane. What repentance can there be, how-
ever, for those who have no alternatives from which to
choose? What shall thousands of Jewish Youth choose
from, if devoid of tradition or the discipline of faith they
have become estranged from the ideals of their God and
people; if having been raised in a spiritual vacuum, and
not privileged to experience the warmth of a religious
environment, they now reap the whirlwind? From what
source shall they draw inspiration and spiritual forti-
tude in this period of blood, sweat and tears? How can
they fear no evil if He is not with them. Before one can
return, let him be given something to which he can re-
turn. -
This is the challenge of the New Year! Will human-
ity continue to follow the road that leads to destruction
or will it, with God's help, repent and live. Let Israel
lead the way. Our sages have said:
Repentance, Prayer and Charity will remove the evil
verdict.
