ROOSEVELT'S
NEW YEAR
MESSAGE
to the
JEWISH PEOPLE
OF AMERICA
11
Upon the occasion of the Jewish New
Year, I extend to the Jewish people of
America my heartfelt greetings. The tragic
turn of events which has temporarily left many
peoples of the world suffering under the harsh
domination of foreign dictators has stirred
America to the depths and has strengthened
our resolution that there shall be no com-
promise in the struggle against hate, intoler-
ance and bigotry.

The first notable event in a
year filled with meaning for the
Jews of the United States came
with the death of Louis D. Bran-

Brandeis was mourned
throughout the world not only
as the first Jew ever to reach
this country's supreme bench, but
as an outstanding advocate of

in that famous phrase: "Holmes

Overwhelming in its importance,
of course, was the nation's declar-
