GENEVA (WNS) — The Jew-
ish population of Vienna, in the
years before Hitler a happy and
thriving community of 175,000,
has been reduced by executions,
imprisonment and deportations
to 33,000 persons. These figures
were reported with obvious satis-
faction by Nazi Commissioner
Baldur von Shirach in an inter-
view in the Nazi newspaper
"Foolkischer Beobachter."
The Nazi Commissioner stated
that since the Nazi occupation
of Austria the Nazis have seized
300,000 rooms once occupied by
Jews in Vienna. The rooms were
made available to "Aryans," he
said. He reported that most of
the Jewish community had been
deported to Polish ghettos; many
others had been executed or
sent to Nazi concentration
camps.
The remaining 33,000 Jews in
Vienna, the Nazi Commissioner
declared, have at their disposal
7,000 rooms. This means that
five Jews must share one room.
The furniture and other house-
hold possessions formerly owned
by Jews have been distributed
among "Aryans."

On Friday night, March 13,
Temple Israel dedicated the first
part of the future building of
Temple Israel, namely, a newly
constructed pulpit which for the
present will be used in the Lec-
ture Hall of the Detroit Insti-
tute of Arts but which will be
placed on the altar of the future
new Temple Israel. The new
pulpit is the gift of Mr. and
Mrs. Harry W. Gilberg. At the
Sabbath Eve services of March
13, Rabbi Fram performed the
ceremony of dedication. Before
placing the Scroll upon the new
pulpit, and while the entire Con-
gregation stood he pronounced
the Shehecheyonu, the tradition-
al blessing of dedication. "God
grant," said the Rabbi, "that all
the members of the Congrega-
tion and its friends their health
and strength to see the day
when this pulpit will be carried
into a new structure which will
be the shrine of Temple Israel."
