Jewish Postwar Problems
Russian War Relief
Common danger makes strange bed-
fellows, and rarely if ever have there
been found a stranger assortment in the
same bed than in the case of Russian
War Relief.
All the opponents of the military police
regime called Bolshvism are wrestling
with the problem of helping or not help-
ing to salvage, rehabilitate, succor and
heal the wounded, diseased soldiers and
citizens of Russia.
It is difficult for the most forgiving to
forget the two decades of brutality,
purges and degradation of the human
spirit that were implicit in Soviet policy
and practice. Then, too, the Hitler-Stalin
pact of August, 1939, that precipitated
the war is still a fresh memory. Besides
all this there is the profound fear that
a Russian victory in Europe will expose
us to the pervasive, poisonous propaganda
of Bolshevism.
All of this has produced what the psy-
chologists call a "mind set." Can we and
should we try to change that "mind set"
in the face of the present and urgent
medical needs of these hard pressed
people.
We must first answer the questions, are
these people responsible for the actions
of their government? Did they ever have
a vote or a voice in the affairs of their
country since the Bolsheviks came to
power? To both these questions we ans-
wer categorically and emphatically, no.
Something can be said in favor of the
Bolsheviks in their treatment of the Jews
as an ethnic or racial group. True, they
treated them with the same ruthlessness
as a religious or dissident political group
as they treated all religious and dissident
political groups. We believe in religious
and political freedom and consequently
condemn them for their suppression of
religious and political dissent.
We are not committed to an accept-
ance and approval of the Bolshevik creed
and philosophy when we join in the Rus-
sian War Relief movement.
