WASHINGTON (IPS)—The
Demand for Agricultural Supplies for Middle Eastern
Army Results in Launching Large Settlements
in Southernmost Palestine
NEW YORK.—Two new Jewish
settlements were established in
the Holy Land last week as part
of the program of the Jewish
Agency for Palestine to spur food
production for the local popula-
tion and for the British and allied
armies garrisoned in Palestine, ac-
cording to a, cable from Jeru-
salem. Housing refugees from
Germany, Poland, and Yugo-
slavia, the colonies, located in
southermost Palestine. were fi-
nanced by the United Palestine
Appeal, American Jewry's cen-
tral agency for the rebuilding of
the Jewish homeland.
On Wednesday 137 young refu-
gees occupied 1,500 acres of the
new colony Manof, on the site of
ancient Gath, where Goliath the
Philistine was born and to which
David fled from Saul. On the
same day, 132 other refugees set-
tled on 2,500 acres in the new
colony of Habone near Ruhama.
Both new settlements are in the
direction of the Egyptian frontier.
In making public the cable-
gram from Dr, Arthur Hantke,
director of the Palestine Founda-
tion Fund in Jerusalem, Dr. Abba

famous story of Moses and the
Red Sea was at last taken up
by President Roosevelt when,
asked during a press confer-
ence what he thought of the
German bombings of Red Sea
shipping, he said that one of
the few prominent Jews still
left in Germany was approach-
ed by Hitler, who declared that
if he could reveal how Moses
was able to make the waters
of the Red Sea part so that
the children of Israel could
cross in safety, the German
Jew would be allowed to re-
main in the country.
Recently S. A. Lozovsky,
the Russian spokesman, used
the same story to the effect
that Hitler was looking for the
secret of the Red Sea crossing
but that the stick which Moses,
had used to part the waters
was in the British Museum—
and unreachable.
and the United ewish Appeal,
said:
"In the establishment of these
two new settlements on Dec. 23,
an additional contribution is be-
ing made by Palestine Jews to
the strengthening of the coun-
try's capacity to serve the war
effort. The Jewish Agency for
Palestine, supported with the
funds of the United Palestine Ap-
peal, has achieved remarkable
successes in increasing food pro-
duction by 40 per cent since the
beginning of the war. This saves
valuable shipping space for tanks
and airplanes. The Jews in Pales-
tinc are rendering a significant
service by producing food sup-
plies, manufacturing and repair-
itig the machines of war and by
enlistment in the Jewish units in
the British forces."

MRS. SYDNEY CHARLES SHOR
(Mrs. Laurette Rothschild)
Beauty and dignity marked the
wedding of Miss Laurette Roths-
child and Sydney Schor, of De-
troit, Mich., which was solemn-
ized Dec. 22 at the home of the
bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ir-
vin B. Rothschild in Columbus,
Ga. Rabbi Herbert Waller read
the ceremony before friends and
relatives.
The ceremony took place before
an altar impovised of palms and
ferns about the mantel. Pedestal
baskets holding white gladioli,
snapdragon, Easter lilies and car-
nations flanked the altar and
white tapers burned in cathedral
candelabra.
The nuptial music was played
by Prof. Louis Chase at the piano
and Miss Gertrude Chase on the
harp. They played Liebestraum
and "Because," Tiernes Serenade
preceding the entrance of the
bridal party.
Mr. Rothschild gave his daugh-
ter in marriage and Michael
Schor, of Detroit, was his son's
best man. For her wedding the
bride wore an original Milgrim
model of forest green wool fash-
ioned with short coat trimmed
with mink. A hat of the forest
green, mink trimmed, and other
accessories of brown completed
her cosutme. Her flowers were
bronze orchids.
The house was decorated
throughout with white gladioli
and snapdragon.
Mr. Schor and his bride left
for a wedding trip to Palm Beach,
Miami and other points of Flor-
ida. Later they will go to De-
troit where they will make their
home.
A beautiful affair of Sunday
evening, Dec. 21, was the dinner
party at which Mr. and Mrs.
Maurice Rothschild and Mr. and
Mrs. Jake Rothschild entertained
at the Ralston, in compliment to
their niece.

The viciously anti-Jewish Span-
ish newspapers which were sent
to Spanish students here were
noticed by an alert teacher who
took away the "literature" from
his class.
One of the magazines sent out
by the Spanish Library of Infor-
mation, Espana Nueva, carried a
story, under this headline: "Jew-
ish Applause? . . . Foxy, Foxy:"
The story reads as follows:
"That Jewish press, whose mis-
sion is none other than Marxist
and Bolshevik propaganda, per-
sonifies the international clique
which applauds or hisses at Mos-
cow's command. The champions
of Stalin, those who conferred
Zionist honors on Roosevelt,
those who take tea with Mrs.
Roosevelt, those who applauded
. . . the robbers of the Spanish
treasury and the assassins of the
Spanish people . . . must logically
attack and defame Franco and
the . . . ideals . . . which he
represents."
The Shema intoned, the Rev. Kusevitsky stood at the top of
the steps that led up to the Ark before moving to the Almemar
in the center of the Synagogue. (This was during the Passover
services of 1941).

GENEVA (JPS) — Because

forts.

Kreuz. who gave a review of two

The tremendous pressure being
put on French Jewry by the Nazis
is highlighted in the order by
the Nazi Commandant in Paris,
General Heinrich con Stuelpnagel,
that the newly created Union of
French Jews, which has not yet
been completely organized, ar-
range that the Jews pay the Ger-
mans a milliard-franc fine in full.
Although the method of obtain-
ing the fine is not clear, it seems
that one of the schemes is to
confiscate Jewish property an
sell it to non-Jews. The money
realized from this transaction is
to go into a bank in the name
of the owner, after a 10 per cent
tax from the sale of the property
is put aside for needy Jews.
95 Jewish Hostages Slain, Five
Others Reprieved
Held as hostages on charges of
having attacked Germans in oc-
cupied France, 95 Jews were exe-
cuted, it was reported to La
Suisse, Berne newspaper, by its
Paris correspondent. Five others,
non-Jews, seized at the same time
were released "for lack of evi-
dence," the report stated.
Ghettos for Rumanian Jews Lead
Off New Restrictions
The new calendar year opened
on a blacker note for the Jews of
Central Europe and the Balkans
as the Rumanian Government an-
nounced that it is preparing to
establish new ghettos for Jews
within Rumania itself. The first
of these will be erected in Con-
stanza and in Giurgiu by Feb. 1.
In other directions Rumania,
Bulgaria and Hungary empha-
sized that they intend to follow
and improve on the Nazi anti-
Semitic lead. Thus, as of Jan-
uary 1st, Rumanian Jews were
forbidden to purchase cigarettes,
cigars and other tobacco products.
Even though virtually all films
shown in Rumania and Bulgaria
originate in the United States and
Great Britain, it has now been
decided to discontinue the showing
of films in which Jewish actors
appear or which have been pro-
duced by Jews. The exclusion
order will be gradual in order
not to shut down the movie houses
at once.
