DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle

Peerce Makes Met

NEW YORK. — (JPS) —
The dream of a Jewish tenor
to sing from the stage of the
Metropolitan Opera House will
be realized this winter, when
Jan Peerce, famous for his
work at Radio City Music Hall,
takes roles in a numbet• of
operas, it was revealed here
by Edward Johnson, Met man-
ager, in announcing that Peerce
had been signed to a contract.
For years, the golden tones
of Peerce have been heard on
the nation's radios and concert
stages and occasionally in non-
New-York opera appearances.
The question as to why he
never reached the Met was al-
ways explained by the physi-
cal appearance of Peerce, who
is somewhat short and has what
are erroneously referred to as
"Semitic features."

Jay Allen, one of America's
great journalists, war core•spon-
dent and roving reporter for
American and English pc,ers, is
to speak next Friday Morning,
Nov. 28, at 11 o'clock, for the
Detroit Town Hall, in the Cass
Theater. Jay Allen is as diftin
guished as a lecturer as he is
a reporter, and he is one of this
country's most outstanding for-
eign correspondents, his roving
assignment for the Chicago Tri-
bune and as head of the Foreign
Press Service having given him
a unique background for in-
terpreting the events that are
now destroying Europe and
threatening world civilization.
Allen tells in "I Saw It Hap-
pen" of his arrest and imprison-
ment for four months by the Ger-
man forces in Occupied France
and discloses information gath-
ered from other prisoners and
Nazi guards.
