sought by societies and individ-
uals who would like to establish
contact with them, but there is
not anywhere a centralized di-
rectory of all such persons.
The Jewish Information Bu-
reau, which has already assem-
bled a considerable number of
such names and addresses, has
therefore undertaken to build up
a complete list in the shape of
a directory, and would be grate-
ful for all suggestions that would
help to complete this "Who's
Who" of eminent refugees.
"The directory, when com-
pleted in card catalogue form
and later made available for
distribution," said Mr. Richards,
"is bound to be helpful to the
persons sought, and also to be
of significant service to cultural
and educational activities in the
United States which by proper
contact with the distinguished
visitors from abroad, can benefit
in different directions."
The Jewish Information Bu-
reau has been functioning for
several years, serving as a
clearing-house of information,
and answering inquiries on vari-
ous phases of Jewish communal,
religious, educational and phil-
anthropic activities. Its service is
given free to the public. It is
sponsored by a committee which
includes: Dr. Joshua Bloch, Rob-
ert Daru, Jacob Fishman, Reu-
ben Fink, Monroe Coldwater,
Sylvan Gotschal, Louis Lipsky,
Dr. Samuel Margoshes, Israel
Matz, Hon. Carl Sherman, Dr.
Mordecai Soltes, Professor Har-
ry Wolfson, and J. L. Warkow,
secretary.
GENEVA (JPS) — Some
idea of the difficulties of con-
tact between this isolated spot
and the rest of Nazi-held
Europe is evident from this
schedule of mailing time:
Letters from Istanbul take
12-18 days; letters, mostly
open cards, from Poland, i. e.,
the General Gouvernement,
10-12 days; air mail from New
York and London. 12-15 days.
There is no communication
with the Baltic countries, with
German - occupied Serbia or
Greece, except for air mail
letters to the latter. The Ger-
man-occupied part of France
and Belgium are still cut off
from any communication with
Switzerland and with the out-
side world in general, except
with Germany.

The Jewish Information Bu-
reau, 103 Park Ave., New York
City, announced, through its
chairman, Bernard G. Richards,
the establishment of a directory
of distinguished emigres, intend-
ed to list all eminent and out-
standing persons, who, driven
here by the European upheaval,
are now sojourning in the United
States. This undertaking has
been occasioned by many inqui-
ries received about the where-
abouts of these notables, vari-
ous organizations, publications
and individuals wishing to con-
tact them for different purposes
or on account of previous asso-
ciation with them in the old
world.
As it was explained by Mr.
Richards, some of the most emi-
nent among the refugees of re-
cent arrival are frequently men-
tioned in the public print, or are
otherwise brought to the atten-
tion of the public through aca-
demic and similar affiliations.
However, there are many more
persons of distinction here,
among them writers, scholars, ar-
tists, religious teachers, research
workers and persons of similar
attainments, who are living here
quite unknown, and in many in-
stances, obscurely. Frequently
these leaders of European cul-
tural and community life are
