Convention
BUFFALO (JPS)—With some
40,000 members represented by
delegates, the Jewish War Vet-
erans of the United States met
here for a five-day convention,
beginning Aug. 28, with prob-
lems of assistance to the national
defense paramount in the dis-
cussions,
During a symposium on Ameri-
canism and national defense, at
which various Jewish organiza-
tions had representatives, Prof.
James Sheldon, chairman of the
board of the Anti-Nazi League,
charged that the America First
Committee was the front for all
the anti-democratic forces in
America. Specifically, he declared
that it was "a front for Adolf
Hitler. It is not necessary to
analyze the literature of the
America First Committee to dis-
cover within it the innunendos
against the Jews, the attacks
upon the democratic leaders in
America and England, and the
other signs of the regular Hit-
ler 'line'."
Only Hitler Not Hissed
Referring to a Carnegie Hall,
New York, meeting of the
America First Committee, at
which John T. Flynn, its chair-
man, Philip La Follette and
President McCracken of Vassar
spoke, Prof. Sheldon said "there
was only one man prominent in
the press of today who was not
attacked by any speaker and who
was not booed and hissed by the
audience. His name is Adolf Hit-
ler."
In his report as national com-
mander to the 46th annual con-
vention, Fred S. Haris of Meri-
den, Conn., described the role
