Lappin Arbitrates
Important Dispute

United Charity Institutions
of Jerusalem Appeal
for Funds

The song which Curtis Olsen,
AFL employe of the Allis-Chal-
mers Manufacturing Co. here,
sang while at work was not suffi-
ciently derogatory to the CIO
union in the plant to warrant his
discharge by the company for
alleged interference with com-
pany discipline, according to a
finding by Attorney A. C. Lappin
of Detroit, an Arbitrator, Thurs-
day.
Lappin was appointed by Dr.
John R. Steelman of Washing-
ton, D. C., chief of the United
States Conciliation Service, to
hear the case.
Olsen was discharged by the
company in September, 1940, af-
ter representatives of the CIO
United Automobile Workers' local
union in the plant had corn-
plained that Olsen's song had
libeled the CIO group, in viola-
tion of the CIO labor agreement
with the company.
At the request of David Pre-
viant, counsel for Olsen, the com-
pany agreed to arbitrate the mat-
ter under a clause in its union
agreement. A hearing was held
July 30.
Waldemar 0. Sonnemann, coun-
sel for the CIO union, said the
CIO would opose the Arbitrator's
findings. Sonnemann said the mat-
ter might be referred to Dean
Lloyd Carrison of the University
of Wisconsin law school, arbitrat-
or for the CIO and the company
under the 1941 labor agreement.

company of Rabbi M. Walden-

RABBI R. H. GOLDMAN

lira Hospital). Rabbi Goldman is
one of the members of the faculty
of Etz Chaim Yeshivah.
Founded by the late Gaon,
Rabbi Samuel Salant, Etz Chaim
and Bicur Cholim are among the
major institutions in Eretz Is-
rael. Etz Chains includes a com-
plete system of elementary
schools—two main centers and
nine branches, a junior academy
and a senior Yeshivah in Jeru-
salem, with a total enrollment of
1350. Bicur Cholim is a recog-
nized hospital in the Holy Land,
and its staff includes some of the
outstanding doctors, among them
renowned refugees from European
countries. It also maintains the
only Home for Incurables in Pal-
estine and a free dispensary.
The combined annual budget of
the United Charity Institutions
is $220,000. During the present
critical period, occasioned by the
war situation, the burden of the
maintenance of these important
medical and educational centers
for the Jewish settlement in Pal-
estine, rests almost entirely upon
American Jewry.
Rabbi Goldman's solicitation
does not conflict with the tradi-
tional "Tat U-Bach" boxes, which
are cleared during the year by
the local representative of United
Charity Institutions, Rev. I.
Gaierman. The work of both
Rabbi Goldman and Mr. Gaier-
