"V" Is NOT Verboten Anti-Typhus Vaccine
Found in Palestine
NEW YORK.—(JPS)—Among

the refugee passengers on board
the Nyassa which arrived here
last week was one who was wear-
ing a "V" button he had picked
up in Bermuda. A newspaper
reporter asked him where he had
bought the emblem.
The refugee, fresh from a
Fr en c h concentration camp,
blanched at the question, and
in a voice full of alarm, asked:
"It is not permitted here?"

LONDON.—A group of Jewish
scientists, working at the He-
brew University in Jerusalem,
has perfected a new technique
for fighting typhus and has
placed it at the disposal of the
British Government. Among the
doctors who woi•ce(1 on this new
and very important medical dis-
covery is a number of German-
Jewish refugees, who had estab-
lished reputations as researchers
before Hitler ousted them from
the Third Reich.
The new technique against
typhus consists of a special
process whereby eggs are inoccu-
lated with the virus and are used
as a vaccine. In London circles
it is pointed out that this dis-
covery bears considerable mili-
tary importance. Epidemics have
often in the past led to the
demoralization of armies as well
as of the civilian population.
Any method for the prevention
of epidemics is therefore a con-
tribution of the utmost impor-
tance to the morale of the forces.
Typhus is widespread and occurs
frequently in the East.
This discovery illustrates the
many ways in which the Yishuv
aids in Britain's war-effort.

Bnai Brith Provides First Sefer Torah for an
Army Cantonment

August 15, 1941

Free Synagogue
Plan Is Urged
By A. C. Lappin

A congregational plan for De-
troit patterned after the Free
Synagogue of New York was
urged this week by A. C. Lappin.
In a statement to the Detroit
Jewish Chronicle, Mr. Lappin
said:
"I have long had in view a
plan for synagogue organization
which, I hope, may yet be put
into action. With the formation
of the new Temple Israel, which
has called Rabbi Leon Fram to
be its spiritual guide, such a
plan ought to have an excellent
sponsor in this new congrega-
tion.
