cbservances. "Here the child
asks," and "here the father gives,
or is supposed to give, his re-
ply," are characteristic sentences
which we meet in the Passover
ritual, Analyzing this sentence
carefully we find that the true
meaning of it is that the father,
the head of the house, the one
who is responsible for the up-
bringing of his child, ought to
prepare his home in such a man-
ner as to arouse the curiosity of
a child.
This is why the Seder cere-
mony is such a momentous event
in our religious life. This is why
the Seder observance is so rich
in content, and beautiful in its
external appearance. It inducts
the child into a spirit of asking
questions. The matzo, the bitter
herbs, the reclining facilities, the
haraseth, the cup of Elijah, which
is placed so conspicuously on the
a
table, everything has a deep and
far-reaching significance, and
the child who sees these symbols
asks "Mah Nishtanoh" (Where-
fore is it different?). This af-
fords the father a great oppor-
tunity to acquaint the child with
a period of our ancient history,
with the Exodus from Egypt,
with the liberation of our people
from bondage. It goes down to
the roots of our national life.
There is no holiday, and there is
hardly a religious observance
with which the Exodus from
Egypt is not directly or indi-
rectly connected.
Furthermore, the Haggadah,
which we use as the text for
our Seder night ritual, deals with
the problem of education on a
very large scale. In fact, it even
points to the insurmountable dif-

ficulties with which this prob-
lem is encountered. I refer here
to the "Four Sons of the. Hag-
gadah"—the wise, the wicked, the
innocent, and one who knows not
what to ask. This passage teaches
us that education must be im-
parted in an intelligent manner.
Not all children are alike, not
all children possess the same in-
telligence, even if they are of
the same age. There is the wise
child, the developed child, but

there is also the backward, the

subnormal child, and the educa-

tional approach in each case must
be different. When the intelligent
child questions his father con-

cerning the holiday and its cere-
monies, the answer prescribed in
the Haggada is suited only for
a child of such an intelligence
level; while the ignorant child is
treated differently. This is a
great pedagogic lesson.
Our fathers must ask them-
selves, "Are we equipped with
the proper answers for the vari-
ous questions asked by the dif-
ferent types of children?" My
advice to these fathers is: con-
