Mrs. F. D. Roosevelt
Urges Building of
Dynamic Democracy
NEW YORK (WNS) — More
than 1500 hundred women as-
sembled at the eighth annual
luncheon of the Women's Division
of the American Jewish Congress
heard Mrs Franklin D. Roose-
velt call for the building of a
dynamic democracy by teaching
the children of the country "to
grow up with respect for every
other American citizen."
Discussing the needs of the
moment, Mrs. Roosevelt empha-
sized that "in America we have
no narrow ground for patriotism"
because "it is of no one racial
strain and because we come from
many lands and from many rac-
ial strains."
She lauded the contribution of
the Jewish people to the building
of the American nation and re-
cited in detail some of the con-
tributions of Jews to the found-
ing of the Republic in the days
of the revolution. She called up-
on the people to learn not to be
afraid.
Mrs. Roosevelt lauded the work
of the Women's Division of the
Congress, particularly its activi-
ties in the maintenance of the
three Congress Houses as a refu-
gee for exiles from oppression,
and its work in contributing
towards the printing of text books
for the schools of the country
that will give children a realiza-
tion of what America really
means.
The keynote sounded by Mrs.
Roosevelt was re-echoed in the
addresses of the other speakers.
These included Dr. Frank Bohn,
national chairman of the German-
American Congress for Democ-
racy; Katherine Devereaux Blake,
educator; Dr. Stephen S. Wise,
president of the American Jew-
ish Congress; Dr. Maurice L.
Perlzweig, chairman of the Brit-
ish Section of the World Jewish
Congress; and Mrs. Stephen S.
Wise, who presided.

SHOMRIM

minsky, executive secretary of
the Histadruth and distinguished
Palestinian statesman and labor
leader. Convention sessions will
be held at Jericho Temple, Joy
Road near Lawton.
Cut off from the European sec-
tion of close to 70,000 Shomrim,
the American movement takes
upon itself the large tasks of
directing and aiding the world
organization which is working
underground in Nazi and Soviet
held European countries. Contact
with Kibutz Artzi, a federation
of Hashomer Hatzair farm col-
lectives in Palestine, and orien-
tatio not the work of the yuoth
movement in relation with it is
also the new task of the Amer-
ican section. Discussions of the
convention will be directed at
these issues.
Meetings of the two American
kibutzim still in America will
be held to decide problems of
future training on the Hechalutz
training farms and on future
aliyah to Palestine to settle on
the land alongside two other
American colonies, Ein Hashofet
and Kfar Menachem.
Zionism and Palestine and the
war, and the war in relation to
the workers movements in Amer-
ica, Palestine and elsewhere will
be the focal points around which
clarifications will be held and ac-
tion decided upon. The vital ques-
tion of the defense of Palestine
and the emergence of a bi-nation-
al commonwealth at the termina-
tion of the struggle will be ex-
amined carefully,
The approach of Hashomer Hat-
zair to American Jewish youth
13
wil be examined and a synthesis
will be sought of the tzofiut
(scouting) values with the new
grave demands of the world move-
ment. The problem of translat-
ing educational theories into con-
crete political action in the Zion-
ist scene in America and Pales-
tine will be a major issue before
the conclave.
The development of the kibutz
movement in the American Jew-
ish community and its role and
effect on the youth will be pre-
sented for discussion.
