Appeals to Complete $35,000
With but three weeks remain-
ing before the opening of the
9th national veidah (convention)
of Hashomer Hatzair, world Zion-
ist scout movement, in Detroit,
local members of this world wide
organization are devoting much
time in preparatory work for the
occasion. In addition to the nu-
merous technical arrangements
for this event at which delegates
from all over the North Ameri-
can continent will gather, Ken
Detroit is preparing for a pag-
eant to be presented at the open-
ing assembly of the convention in
Northern High School auditor-
ium, Tuesday evening, April 15.
The pageant, Mema'makim (from
the Depths) in its panoramic
sweep of the status of world
Jewry, attempts to unify the cen-
trality of the Jewish dilemma be
it in Poland, Palestine, or Amer-
ica.
There will be delegates at the
convention from Mexico and Pal-
estine.
It is interesting to note that
the name for the pagent Mema'-
makim (from the Depths) was
taken from the title of a small
brochure which was the first He-
brew publication of the Lithuan-
ian branch of Hashomer Hatzair
since the outbreak of the war.
Issued in the fall of 1940, the
reception of the piece of litera-
ture meant that fellow chalutzim
in chaos-torn Eastern Europe
were still standing strong, that
the chalutz movement—so close
on the brink of Jewish disaster—
was yet working among Jewish
youth. From each page of this
refugee brochure there emanated
the bitter, stubborn cry of Jew-
ish youth in the face of an omi-
nous future. From each page
there rose the call to Jews to
fight until the end for survival,
for common strength, for return
to their redeeming homeland in
Palestine.
At the meeting of the Detroit
region of the Michigan Syna-
gogue Conference held last Sun-
day, jointly with the workers of
the Yeshivath Beth Yehudah
Building Fund, under the chair-
manship of David I. Berris, com-
plete reports for the drive showed
total pledges of $21,548. Rabbi
Isaac Stollman, president of the
Yeshivah, addressed the meeting
and expressed gratitude to the
following 30 workers who dis-
tinguished themselves in the cam-
paign launched Feb. 9:
