GENEVA. — (WNS) — Hun-
dreds of Bulgarian Jews, includ-
ing many Zionist leaders and
others active in Jewish public
life, were arrested and taken
into "protective custody" as hun-
dreds of thousands of Nazi troops
poured into Bulgaria presumably
en route to Salonika, it was re-
liably reported here.
The mass arrests were made
by Bulgarian police, armed with
lists of influential Jews, provided
by Gestapo agents, the inevitable
vanguard of a Nazi army of oc-
cupation. Most of the arrests oc-
curred in Sofia where Gestapo
agents assumed complete control
of the Bulgarian police depart-
ment.

Speaking before the budget
committee of the Detroit Serv-
ice Group on Tuesday evening,
Harry Greenstein, executive di-
rector of the Associated Jewish
Charities of Baltimore, indicated
that restoration of unity in fund-
raising in this country is possible,
and that important announce-
ments will be made in a few
days.
Mr. Greenstein stated that
negotiations are still being car-
ried on and that the last differ-
ence of opinion is over a 2
per cent margin in distribution .

Budget Meetings Sunday
Preliminary preparations for
the forthcoming Detroit Allied
Jewish Campaign are proceeding.
Headquarters have been opened
at Hotel Stotler, and numerous
divisions will be organized soon.
Leading figures, active in the
work of the Joint Distribution
Committee, the United Palestine
Appeal and the National Refu-

budgetary requests of their re-
spective organizations at the
hearings to be conducted by the
major overseas section of the
1941 Allied Jewish Campaign
budget committee, throughout
the day on Sunday, March 9, at
Hotel Stotler.
The debate on the proposal for
the setting up of a budgeting
committee sponsored by the Coun-
cil of Jewish Federations and Wel-
fare Funds continued this week,
with William J. Shroder of Cin-
cinnati, chairman of the board of
the Council of Federations, favor-
ing the proposal, and Rabbi James
G. Heller of Cincinnati oppos-
ing it.
Hadassah joined the Zionist Or-
ganization of America, the Amer-
ican Jewish Congress and the
Bnai Brith in expressing opposi-
tion to the proposal.
The Cleveland Jewish Commu-
nity Council, by a vote of 81 to
2, went on record against the
plan.

Editor's Note: Ever heard of Choni, the Falstaff of the Zionist
movement in America? If you have not, you should have. If you
have, how much do you know about him? The able A m erican-Jewish

Jewish Chronicle under the title "By the Way", has written this
interesting article for The Detroit Jewish Chronicle, filling a gap
in personality history in American Jewry.

"The Great Dictator" is com-

depicting the conflicting forces
which make up the world's strug-

gle for freedom.
The great moment in the pic-
ture is when Chaplin, as the
Jewish barber who is suddenly
placed before the microphone as
the dictator Hynkel delivers the
powerful appeal for justice and
brotherhood. It is a solemn and
impressive event when the world's
greatest comedian utters these
serious words:
"I'm sorry, but I don't want

my business. I don't want to
rule or conquer anyone. I
should like to help everyone, if-
