Appeal for Clothes
An appeal has come from the
New York office of the Women's
Division of the American Jewish
Congress to collect discarded,
serviceable, slightly worn cloth-
ing for the men, women, and
children of war-torn, bomb-rid-
dled Britain. There is an impera-
tive need of warm clothing for
these harassed peoples, who are
fighting democracy's battle. This
must be given whole-hearted sup-
port.
For further details please call
Mrs. Max Dushkin, vice-president
in charge of fund-raising, Trin-
ity 2-5155, who will arrange to
have a member of the pick-up
squad collect the bundle imme-
diately.

women who do nothing but fash-
ion the songs Americans sing.
But now comes the newest in-
spirational and patriotic ballad,
the 'American Symphony,' only
half of which—in this case the
music—is the work of a pro-
fessional musician. The lyrics are
by Lawrence M. Brile, successful
businessmen, poet and president
of Bnai Brith's District Grand
Lodge No. 3, who hails from
Fairmont, W. Va. The music was
written by Nat Brusiloff, • the
eminent New York orchestra
leader and composer.
"American Symphony" was
given its premiere by the United
States Army Band, whose direc-
tor, Captain Thomas F. Darcy,
Jr., has agreed to introduce it
over the air. Those who have
heard the Brile-Brusiloff opus say
it is as catchy as "God Bless
America," as tuneful as "Ballad
for Americans" and as meaning-
ful as any patriotic song ever
written.
We can't reproduce the music
for you, but we can give you the
words. Here they are:

separate campaigns. However, in
welfare fund cities of which De-
troit is a case in point, the only
change in procedure will be that
the budget committee will not
have before it a previously ac-
cepted national formula for alloca-
tion of funds. This will mean
that our local budget committee,
with due regard for the relative
needs of the various agencies, will
have the responsibility of deter-
mining allotments. Whatever
change in budgetary responsibil-
ity may be involved, no change
in fund-raising machinery or pro-
cedure is indicated.

There's a Yankee in New England
and a colonel in the South,
But there's not a single gag on
any person's mouth,
And no one to dictate except the
conscience of a man,
In that scintillating symphony we

There's a Chinaman in a laun-

hash,
And maybe a Negro boy winning
a fifty yard dash,
But each and everyone is happy
arne,
de each and everyone is
free,
As they sing along together, 'My

And we don't care if they be

true,
We shall grasp them by the hand,

Lawrence Brile hails originally
from Spokane, Wash., where he
first saw daylight late in the last
century. He grew up in Louis-
ville, where he earned a degree
at Jefferson School of Law. From
the law he got into the sales
end of the metal reduction in-
dustry. Brile had yet to cast his
first vote when he found himself
sales manager of the U. S. Re-
duction Company. When he was
but 25 he was vice-president of
the United Smelting and Alumi-
num Company of New Haven.
After a brief fling at being in
business for himself, he joined
the National Smelting Company
of Cleveland as sales manager.
Since 1926 he has been president
of the Fairmont Aluminum Com-
pany, of Fairmont, W. Va., the
world's largest independent alumi-
num manufacturers. Having lived
in every section of the country—
Pacific Northwest, the South, New
statement quotes the joint ex-
planation issued by Dr. Abba
Hillel Silver and Dr. Jonah B.
Wise, the text of which will
be found in the leading story
regarding the dissolution of the
United Jewish Appeal.)
"In the spirit of this state-
ment, the Detroit Jewish com-
munity, for the common good of
the 50 local, national and over-
seas causes included in the Al-
lied Jewish Campaign, is pro-
ceeding with plans for our an-
nual spring effort with the knowl-
edge that the contributing public
will give generously toward the
support of the programs requir-
ing our aid.
"The national agencies have,
in effect, asked each local corn-
munity to assun.e for itself the
responsibility of budgeting the
grants to the three major serv-
ices. This responsibility the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation and the
Detroit Service Group now as-
sume with full regard for the
respective needs of the great
causes involved. In due course, a
budgetary formula will be evolved
that will do justice to the Joint
Distribution Committee, the Uni-
ted Palestine Appeal and the Na-
tional Refugee Service and all the
other agencies. And, the Jews of
Detroit, working side by side, all
together, will raise the greatest
amount possible for continuing
normal needs and for the emer-
gency; for requirements at home
and for reconstruction and relief
abroad."
Fred M. Butzel is chairman of
the Jewish Welfare Federation
executive committee.
England, the Middle West, and
now the Middle Atlantic region

people—to the symphony of
America.
Brile did not permit his resi-
dence in a town off the main-
stream of Jewish life to deflect
him from a deep-rooted interest
in and concern with Jewish prob-
lems. He was for many years
president of the Jewish Student
Foundation at the University of
West Virginia, now a link in the
chain of Bnai Brith Hillel units.
Three- years ago, when District
Grand Lodge No. 3 was looking
for presidential timber, it select-
ed Brile as third vice-president.
Today he is president of the
District and a member of the
national executive committee of
Bnai Brith. Brile has also been
a leader in the Y.M.C.A., serv-
ing on the board of directors of
the Fairmont Y. Plain-spoken,
friendly and democratic, Brile
has made hundreds of talks be-
fore Jewish and non-Jewish
groups throughout West Virginia,
Pennsylvania, Delaware and New
Jersey without letting on that
his real passion is poetry.
