Halevy Musical and Dance
on Jan. 11
The Detroit Halevy Singing
Society opens its 1941 season
of public activities with a musi-
cale-dance which will take place
on Saturday evening, Jan. 11,
in. the social hall of Bnai David,
Elmhurst and Fourteenth. There
will be a musical program be-
ginning about 9 p. m., followed
by dancing and refreshments.
There will be no charge for ad
mision to this event, and all
patrons, associate members, and
former members are invited as
well as all who are interested.
The musical program will fea-
ture the well known violinist,
Sadie Cooper; also Irving Rosen-
gard, a member of the Halevy,
who will be heard in a group
of baritone solos. The Halevy
chorus will appear for several
selections, directed by Dan Froh-
man. The refreshment bar is
under the supervision of Anna
Warren, Halvey entertainment
chairman.
Following a one-week recess
due to New Year's Eve, Halevy
resumes its Tuesday evening re-
hearsals in Northern High School,
Room 123, beginning at 9 p. m.

AZA chapters and one from Win-
dsor assembled at Detroit for a
three-day conclave on Dec. 25,
26 and 27, at the Fort Wayne
Hotel.
Detroit chapter 63 scored a
victory over the Grand Rapids
five in the basketball series. Par-
ticipating in the 53-14 victory
were the following on the De-
troit chapter team: Louis Fried,
Irving Cohen, Sol Cohen, Ed.
Feinstein, Leonard Blum. Mar-
vin Rosenthal, M. Kramer and
Ted Wettingstein.
Grand Rapids took the debat-
ing title with Iry Kleinman and
Lester Wolfson defeating the
Detroit chapter 63 team.
The banquet on Friday after-
noon was the scene of the ora-
tory finals in which Al Cohen of
Windsor was acclaimed winner
over Leon Burg from Bnai Dav-
id chapter 314 and Bernard Ros-
enberg from Bnai Moshe chap-
ter 321. The subject of the ora-
tions was "Religion in the Pres-
ent Chisis."
Rabbi Leon Frans delivered
Cie main address at the banquet.
Rabbi Morris Adler presented
the awards to the victors in the
regional elimination series. The
invocation was given by Rabbi
Jacob Nathan. Isadore Starr, ad-
visor to the convention, acted
as master of ceremonies.
The winners in their respec-
tive fields will be given a free
tr ip to the district finals in
March.
New officers to the Michigan
AZA Conference were elected as
folloisks: President, Connie Ben-
sen of Flint; vice president, Leo
Sobole of chapter 321; secretary,
Don Black of chapter 313; chap-
lain, Ely Shapiro of the Flint
chapter.
Jewish Youth Council to Meet Jan. 6 ; Youth
Organizations to Be Represented
The next step in the develop-
ment of the Jewish Youth Coun-
cil of Detroit will take place on
Monday evening, Jan. 6, at 8:15
p. in., at the Jewish Community
Center, when the continuations
committee convenes to receive re-
ports from the planning commit-
tee.
To the meeting of the contin-
uations committee close to 75 or-
ganizations have been invited to
join the Council and to begin by
sending two delegates to this
meeting. The organizations rep-
resent in the variety of their func-
tis,ns every type of youth group
which may be found in the corn-
munity and which reflect a great
variety of interests: religious,
philanthropic, educational, com-
munal, fraternal and Zionist.
The agenda of the meeting has
been prepared by a planning com-
mittee of seven, which has been
meeting weekly with Herman Ja-
cobs, executive director of the
Jewish Community Center, to
consider organization, purpose,
policy and program of the Jew-
ish Youth Council.
Any organization which is in-
terested and has not yet received
an invitation to the meeting of
Jan. 6, may apply for one at the
office of tne Jewish Community
Center, Woodward at Holbrook.
