Christians join Jews as citizens.

after the war. We must make
certain that during this period
of stress and tension there is no
setback to the goodwill efforts
which we have all been working
for during the past 15 years. On
the contrary, because nerves are
irritable and tempers short these
days we must work harder than
ever before to create better un-
derstanding.
This is the common task of
Jews and Christians today and

bution to make to it.

among Protestants, Catholics and
Jews, and to foster cooperation
among members of their faiths on
matters of common concern to
them as citizens. This is what
the National Conference of Chris-
tians and Jews is doing and urg-
ing every citizen to do. During
this period of world disruption
it is imperative that we all strive
to achieve the brotherhood of
man under the Fatherhood of
God in our own land. Today a
rallying call should be "national
unity means national defense."
It is just as necessary to de-
fend ourselves from attack with-
in as from without. One who en-
deavors to defame any group of
our citizenry, who attempts to
cast suspicion upon the honor or
honsty or patriotic devotion of
the members of any religious or
racial group or implies that any
group is superior or inferior to
any othe group, should be re-
garded as not only traitorous to
our American institutions, but as
interfering with the effective
mobilization of our people into
a united front.
America has an important mis-
sion in the world. This mission is
to demonstrate that a people of
many different strains and racial
and religious origins can live and
work together in amity and un-
derstanding, and that we can
maintain and perfect the pro-
cesses of democracy even in a
world which holds them in little
regard. It is therefore our most
important internal task to resist
any efforts to nullify or vitiate
democratic processes, and to re-
dedicate ourselves with renewed
