are: Dr. Solomon Goldman, Dr.

Dr. Harry F. Wechsler, executive

Hebrew literary activity con-
tinues in Palestine despite the
war and the horrors it brings in
its wake, despite the economic
crisis which has gripped the
country and the outbreak of the
Arab riots in 1936.
In normal times the average
production of Hebrew books in
Palestine has been 300-400 per
annum. That of course does not
include periodicals. There are
three hundred Hebrew authors in
Palestine organized into the Heb-
rew Writers Association, of which
Dr. Simon Ginzburg is recent
president. Dr. Ginzburg, Hebrew
poet and scholar, is now in
America representing the cause
of Hebrew literature in the
Homeland. The present situation

October 4, 1940
has inevitably forced a curtail-
ment of activities in the Pales-
tine book industry (which em-
ploys about a 1,000 people in-
cluding writers, printers, book-
binders, etc.) This activity can
only be placed back on a normal
basis with the assistance from
America.
Yet at the same time the Heb-
rew authors of Palestine continue
to create and publish books. Their
most recent undertaking is the
publication of a 500 page col-
lection of new works by over 60
authors including poets like Saul
Tchernichovsky, writers of fiction
like A. A. Kabak, Avigdor Ha-
meir, and Jehuda Burk), and
scholars like Prof. Joseph Klaus-
ner and Yechezkiel Kaufman.
This publication was financed by
Palestine Hebrew Culture Funds,
Inc., which helps Hebrew litera-
ture and needy Hebrew writers
in Palestine as well.

PALESTINE BOOK
OF MONTH CLUB

A prominent Cincinnati physi-
cian, who is a lover of Hebrew
literature has undertaken to fi-
nance the publication of one
Hebrew book produced in Pales-
tine each year. The book is to
be part of a Book-of-the-Month
Project for Palestine. The Cin-
cinnati physician who wished to
remain anonymous is personally
contributing a substantial sum to
the publication expenses, making
up the remainder among hia
friends. The book will be pub-
lished in the name of the Hebrew
Circle of Cincinnati.
Cincinnati's example was emu-
lated by Cleveland and by Woon-
socket, R. I. It is hoped before
long to have twelve Jewish com-
munities throughout the United
States and Canada finance the
full project of Hebrew Book-of-
the-Month Club for Palestine.
