NEW INDUSTRIAL UNDERTAKINGS
REPORTED FROM PALESTINE

Factory to Utilize Discards

JERUSALEM (Palcor Agen-
cy). — War conditions have in

no way abated the steady growth
of the Yishuv's new industrial
undertakings, pointed toward
achieving self-sufficiency for the
Jewish National Home. A par-
tial account of the latest ven-
tures follows.

Factory for Electrical Equipment
In Jerusalem

A new factory for various
items of electrical equipment and
accessories has been opened in
Jerusalem by Mr. A. Levy, an
electrical engineer of great ex-
perience who ran a similar works
in Budapest. Porcelain insulators
are to be among the first ob-
jects to be manufactured, and
will be the first to be manufac-
tured in this country. Numerous
orders have already been receiv-
ed.

Another interesting "Save for
Victory" project nowNteing start•
ed in Tel Aviv by thI Palestine
Products Association, affiliated
with the Vaad Leumi, is a fac-
tory to utilize discarded tin and
cardboard containers (boot pol-
ish, tooth paste and other simi-
lar products) paper, rags and old
clothes, old boots, waste rubber
and the like. Volunteers will col-
lect the materials in house-to-
house canvasses and will take
them to a central storehouse for
sorting and classification. Profits
after re-utilization and sale will
be devoted to public projects.
For example, The Clauson Fac-
tory in Emek Zebulun, of which
a re port is given above, can melt
down and use various forms of
tin and steel.

Production began a short while
ago on a new industrial under-
taking which will fill a gap in
Palestine's economic activity —
the Clauson, Ltd., Iron Foundry,
headed by Mr. I. Kluger, an ex-
pert who for 30 years held high
ironmaster posts in Germany and
Austria. Mr. Kluger has some
50 patents in his name for vari-
ous forgings and steel-casting
processes. He had been urged by
the Nazi authorities to remain in
Germany, where he was prom-
ised uninterrupted activity, but
he preferred to come to Pales-
tine.
The factory will turn out vari-
ous forms of steel, including
chrome, molybdon, wolfram, nic-
kel and silicium. The founders
of the factory were able to get
the machinery and most of the
steel they needed prior to the
outbreak of war. Some £24,000
pounds have been invested in the
factory, which employs 50 work-
ers. The output will make it pos-
sible for local mchine-assembly
shcrPs to get the machine parts
made on the spot, instead of hav-
ing to send abroad for them. 4

Food Factory in Tel Aviv

We Move Any thing
Special attention given to

Under the directorship of Prof.
M. Beneson, Economic Adviser to
the Vaad Leumi, a new food fac-
tory intends to produce food-
stuffs with a high content of al-
bumen, to replace meat or fish
and other food.
The initiation of this new fac-
tory was possible as a result of
prolonged research and experi-
ments by the chemist S. Kallisch,
who had devised means of utiliz-
ing oranges and tomatoes in bread
and has found other uses for
waste products. Mr. P. Ruten-
berg, President of the Vaad
Leumi, and Mr. Ben Zvi, its
Chairman, have taken a leading
interest in the new factory; and
Prof. W. Strauss, Director of
the Nathan and Lina Straus
Health Center in Jerusalem, en-
dorsed the plans when they were
laid before him.

Rubber Piping Factory

A small factory to turn out

various types of rubber piping has
been started in Haifa by Mr. F.
Levy, who has a leather factory
in the town. Only a few work--
me nare now engaged, but it is
hoped to extend the plant, one
of the first of its kind in the
country. Rubber piping has so
far been imported from abroad,
particularly Hungary, to the ex-
tent of 5,000 pounds per annum.

Edible Oils Produced from
Cotton Seed

Small edible-oils factories

in

Palestine have started to use c*t-
ton seed as a material. Large
quantities of the seed can be had
cheaply on the Egyptian mar-
ket.
Dr. Ben Nathan, head of the
Economics as.d Statistics Depart.
nient of the Te 1 Aviv Municipal-
Municipal-
ity. has expresso I the opinion
that cotton-seed oil can be used
as a basis for the synthetic man-
ufacture of edible oil; identical
in quality to olive oil, using
American processes at a much
lower cost.

New Weaving and Thread
tory Starts

Fac-

TEL AVIV (Palcor Agency)
—Production has commenced at
Naclath Ganim in the new fac-
tory of Kishur, which will Pro-
duce cotton and woolen thread.
The machinery was brought from
England, Belgium and the Unit-
ed States in the last ships to an-
live here before Italy declared
war. It is the second cotton
wool thread factory of its kind
in the country, the first having
been the Ata textile works. There
are 25 workers, most of whom
are expert, headed by Mr. Joseph
Brill, who had 15 years' exper-
ience in this type of work in
Austria. The cotton is received
from Egypt.
The thread is sold to manu-
facturers of stockings, knitted
wear and textiles, and there is
a good demand. The amount of
10,000 pounds has already been
invested in the factory.

Season's Greetings from Battle Creek, Wick.

Faith and works are like the
light and heat of a candle; they
cannot be separated. — Beau-
mont.

all Christian truth;—the only
rule for the Christian life :—the
only book that unfolds to us
the realities of enternity — Sir
Matthew Hale.
