of S ptember. This unit under
the I adership of Bessie Silver-
man, resident, and Mrs. M. Lu-
piloff, general chairman, has been
co-operating with the Red Cross
for the relief of war torn Europe
for many months.

The executive committee of the
Department of Michigan met last
Sunday to formulate plans for
the coming. Military ball to be
held on Feb. 21, 1941, at the
Masonic Temple. All Jewish or-
ganizations are requested to note
the date.

A new post will be formed at
Flint, Mich. The installation of
this baby post will take place at
the Durand Hotel, Flint, on Oct.
20. Dr. Robert Rosen will be
the installing officer with many
comrades and ladies from Detroit
in attendance.

New recruits are being lined
up for a J. W. V. post in Pon-
tiac by Irving Steinman, active
worker for Jewish welfare in
Pontiac, All Jewish war veterans
in that vicinity are urged to affi-
liate themselves as charter mem-
bers of this 45-year-old all-Jewish
veterans' organization. New posts
are also being formed at Lan-
sing, Bay City and Grand Rapids.

Mrs. Eli Levin, widow of the
late Dr. Eli Levin in whose mem-
ory the Lt. Eli Levin Post No.
230 was formed, will shortly pre-
sent a set of colors to the post
bearing her late husband's name.
The date for the presentation
will be announced in this column
at a later date, Commander
Philip Cantor announced.

A letter explaining the aims
and objects of the Jewish War
Veterans of the United States
will shortly go out to all Jewish
organizations and speakers for
these organizations will be fur-
nished to explain and acquaint
the Jewish community with the
J. W. V. program.

Three Michigan Men, Stu-
dents at Hebrew Union
College, Conducting Holy
Day Services.

Three Michigan men are among
45 students of the Hebrew Union
College, Cincinnati, who are con-
ducting High Holyday services in
various communities throughout
the country. This announcement
was made at the Cincinnati office
of the College.
Michigan men and the com-
munities which they are serving
this Rosh Hashonah and Yom
Kippur are:
Albert A. Gordon of Detroit,
at Saginaw, Mich.; Bernard H.
Lavine of Petoskey, at Petoskey,
Mich.; Joseph M. Strauss of Pon-
tiac, at Harlan, Ky.
This year, Mr. Gordon will con-
tinue to serve the Saginaw Con-
gregation Beth El as bi-weekkly
student Rabbi. Temple Beth El
is a member of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations.
Organized in 1875 by the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega-
tions, Hebrew Union College was
the pioneer American Jewish
Theological Seminary. Among its
439 graduates are Dr. Leo M.
Franklin and Rabbi Leon Fram
of Detroit. Dr. Julian Morgen-
stern is the college president.

Greater Detroit Council of Bnai
Brith to Fresent Famous War
Correspondent Nov. 27

At the meeting of the Greater
Detroit Bnai Brith Council held
last Wednesday at the Commu-
nity Center, the delegates repre-
senting the four local lodges of
the order decided to present H.
R. Knickerbocker, world famous
wa, correspondent and Pulitzer
Pliz winner, in a lecture on
We nesday, Nov. 27. The event
will take place in the large audi-
torium of the Masonic Temple.
Mr. Knickerbocker, at present
in London in behalf of Interna-
tional News Service, is scheduled
to leave Europe by Transatlantic
Clipper during the first week of
October. His sensational articles
on the war situation appear in a
large number of newspapers the
country over, the Detroit Times
being his local medium.
In view of the fact that the
net proceeds from this lecture
are contemplated to revert to the
special defense fund of the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith, Jewish organizations are
requested to clear this date.
Louis Rosenzweig is president
of the Council and the commit-
tee in charge of this event con-
sists of Ben F. Goldman, repre-
senting Pisgah Lodge, Joseph
Glaser of Louis Marshall Lodge,
Louis Tischler of Theodor Herzl
Lodge and Louis M. Bloomberg
of Detroit Lodge.

EMJAYCEES
The Emjaycees are open for
membership. A large open meet-
ing will be held at the Educa-
tional Center, Linwood and Bur-
lingame, Oct. 23, to acquaint the
Jewish youth of Detroit with ac-
tivities of Emjaycees. Any young
man or woman over 17 years of
age and of fine moral character
is eligible for membership.
The next meeting will be held

at the home of Miss Charlotte
Byron, 1977 Glendale, Wednes-
day, Oct. 2, at 8:30 p. m. Guests
are invited. Bowling will follow
the meeting.

pleted for the dinner-dance to
be held at the social hall of Tem-
ple Beth El, on Sunday, Oct. 13,
at 5:30 p. in., at which time
Rabbi Selwyn D. Russlander, of
Cincinnati, youth director of the
Union of American Hebrew Con-
gregations, will be the principal
speaker. Rabbi Russlander is in
Detroit to conduct the High Holy
Days services in the social hall
of the Temple, and also to take
an active interest in the plans
of the Young People's Club. He
was a speaker at the National
Federation of Temple Youth's
Regional Convention in Decatur,
Mich. Non-members may attend
only as the guests of the mem-
bers, and all reservations must
be made in advance. There is a
nominal charge for attendance.
At the meeting on Sunday,
Sept. 29, Rabbi Leon Fram gave
an inspiring address and Rabbi
Eric Friedland of Pontiac was in-
troduced. Members of the Young
People's Club are offered free
enrollment in Beth El College of
Jewish Studies, and badminton,
basketball, ping-pong and the for-
mation of a modern dance class
and the production of several
plays will all be begun the week
of Oct. 13.
The next general meeting is
set for Sunday, Oct. 27, for
members only.
Reservations for the dinner-
dance on Oct. 13 must be made
by calling either Bertha Goldhoff,
at UNiversity 3-2110, or Miriam
Savage, at HOgarth 8709.
