Hosh Hashonah-
Holiday of Pride
By RABBI LEIZER LEVIN
All our holidays have their
distinguished characteristics and
their messages which they convey
are different one from the other.
Passover, for instance, is known
as the Holiday of Redemption,
of Liberation; Shevuoth, the day
of the giving of the Torah; Yom
Kippur, the Day of Atonement;
Sucoth, the Feast of Ingathering.
But when we come to the holi-
day Rosh Hashonah, we are at
a loss to find a clear concise
message.
The Torah refers to the blow-
ing of the Shofar. What does
that really signify? To me it
seems that this conveys the idea
of grandeur, of pride. It is a
holiday which speaks not only to
us Jews, but to all mankind. It
speaks of the greatness and the
holiness of God and the great-
ness of man. How great is man
that God Himself thinks of him,
watches over him and even calls
him to judgment when his ways
do not find favor in His eyes.
How proud ought, a Jew be when
he hears the voice of the Shofar
who calls to him, warns him to
wake up, to arise from his slum-
ber. This voice tells him and re-
'minds him that God Himself is
concerned about him, his deeds
and his manner of living. This
thought gives us a feeling of
great importance, and it tells us
at the same time that we must
improve our ways, that we must
deserve this care and attention
given to us by God Himself.
When we look around we see
what goes on now in this world,
when we see that the earth is
drenched with blood, that the
very air is saturated with hat-
red, that brother kills brother,
that men have turned to act like
wild beasts; when we see that
nations rejoice over the fact that
they murdered large numbers of
people, that they annihilated
other nations, that their sword
is mightier than the sword of
the others, that they succeeded
in subduing and oppressing other
people; when we see all this,
how our heart aches for man-
kind that has gone down so low.
Indeed this great and deafening
noise of the cannons and tanks
and bombs have stifled the quiet
unassuming voice of the Shofar
which tells us in its modest man-
ner to live and act like human
beings.
Let us hope that the voice of
the Shofar will reach the ears of
our people, the Jewish people,
the voice which speaks of noble
ideas, noble thoughts, spiritual
values, that this voice will be
heard by our people.
Let the .day Rosh Hashonah
remind us that we have to con-
nect our children with the learn-
ing of our Fathers, with Talmud
Torah, where they are connected
with the God of Israel, with the
people of Israel, and with every-
thing which is good and noble
in this great world of God.
Vaad Hakashruth Activities
for the Coming Winter
Because of the approach of the
High Holidays and the vital prob-
lems of Kashruth confronting
Detroit Jewry, the following reso-
lutions were adopted at an exec-
tive meeting of the Vaad Hak-
ashruth:
"That, in order that Jews of
the city of Detroit shall be en-
lightened in the arising daily
problems of Kashruth and the
great importance for the
strengthening of the Vaad Hak-
ashruth, a series of public gath-
erings and mass-meetings is plan-
ned, one of these to be held Sun-
day, October 6, 7 p.m., at the
Congregation Bnai Zion, Holmur
corner Humphrey Ayes, at which
the world famed Bialstoked Ma-
gid, Rabbi Rappaport, who is
visiting here, will be the guest
speaker, along with members of
the Detroit Council of Rabbis.
"That the Detroit Synagogous
that have been asked to co-
operate with the Vaad Hakash-
ruth, shall not fail to send offi-
cers and members to the above
mentioned meetings.
"That two Rabbis, members of
the Detroit Vaad Harabonim will
meet every Tuesday and Thurs-
day at the Yeshivah Beth Yehu
dah from 3 to 5 p. m., to deal
with every Kashruth problem aris-
ing daily."

shelter in their flight from op-
pression in Yemen. In Aden,
there are now crowded several
thousands of these Jewish refu-
gees hopefully waiting for a pas-
sing steamer for transportation
to Palestine. The war has now
brought added hardships to the
already hard lot of the unfor-
tunate Yemenite Jews. Food and
shelter is lacking and the suf-
fering and distress is intense.
A message and urgent appeal
has just been received from Jo-
sef Ben Daveed, the representa-
tive of the Jewish Agency sta-
tioned at Aden, excerpts from
this heart-rending letter are quo-
ted.
"The suffering of our brethren
that I witness daily on the streets
of Aden is beyond description and
beyond our means to relieve. A
complete book would not picture
all the hardships endured by
these thousands of Yemenite ref-
ugees, several hundred of whom
are orphans and widows lacking
in food and shelter. Where can
these poor refugees go? To whom
can they appeal for aid. They
dare not return to the yoke of
the oppressor in Yemen. They
have but one alternative, they
must wait here in Aden hoping
for relief from abroad, praying
that Jewish hearts will have pity
on them in their misery.
"I feel assured that in America
many noble-hearted Jews will re-
spond to this appeal for aid for
the downtrodden and neglected
Yemenites. American Jews are
known for their charitable na-
ture; they will not deny the help
so urgently needed to save thou-
sands of souls, especially now
amid this dreadful war being
fought directly over our very
heads."
This appeal has the sympathic
support of leading rabbis through-
out the country. At a recent con-
vention of the Rabbinical As-
sembly of America held at De-
troit, a resolution as adopted
urging financial support for the
relief of Yemenite Jews. A na-
tion wide appeal, signed by a
group of rabbis, has ben sent to
Jewish Congregations, requesting
that part of the funds secured
from the Yom Kippur eve or
Shemini Azereth appeal be de-
voted to Yemenite relief.
Contributions from sympathiz-
ers and friends of the Yemenite
cause may be sent to the Ameri-
can Committee for the Relief and
Resettlement of the Yemenite
Jews, 41 Union Sq., New York
City. The chairman of the com-
mittee is Mortimer J. Propp ; the
vice-chairman, Arthur Sherr; the
treasurer. Abraham Mazer; and
the Executive Committee is com-
posed of Abraham Goldberg, Dr.
Samuel H. Goldenson, Rabbi Leo
Jung, Mrs. Rebekah Kohut, Judge
Aaron A. Melniker, Dr. D. de
Sola Pool, Louis P. Rocker and
Rabbi Milton Steinberg. Mr. Za-
charia Gluska, the president of
the Yemenite Community of Pal-
estine, is here in behalf of his
brethren, and will visit the larger
Jewish communities, to acquaint
them with the plight of the Yem-
enite Jews.
