LEONARD ALKON ESTABLISHES
TRACK RECORD FOR NORTHERN

the Central team two years ago
to train under Ralph Loeffler,
it wasn't until last year's East
Side qualifying trials for the
city indoor meet that Leonard
first made his presence felt. He
transferred to Northern in order
to get out of school early and
keep a job as chauffeur.
Ed McRae, the Northern coach,
entered him in the sprints and
he obliged by turning in a 25.4
second performance in the 220-
yard dash, the fastest of the day.
But because he'd transferred
without changing his address, he
was ruled ineligible to compete.
He became eligible this year,
however, and tied Dick Caskey
of Northwestern for the 220 in-
door title. His race outdoors was
the first official one at 100 yards
in which he'd ever run. And he
turned in a time that's good
enough to win most Big Ten
meets in nine out of 10 years.
Besides competing on the track
Progressive Ladies Verein's team, maintaining a "B" average
Mother's Banquet Tuesday in his studies and working out-
side of school, young Alkon still
finds time to become a leader in
various other activities.
Like his older sister, Ferne, a
commercial artist, he has a nat-
ural talent for sketching which
landed him the job of art editor
for the Viking, school yearbook,
and the Light, school paper.

17-year-old
Leonard Alkon,
Northern High School track star,
ran 100 yards in the Wayne Uni-
versity relays on Monday in 9.8
seconds, setting a new record for
the meet and establishing a rec-
ord in Detroit.
Leonard is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Alkon. He weighs 200
pounds, is 6 feet 11/2 inches tall.
He is house president, house
council president, a member of
the student council and shares
the captaincy of the track team
with Ernest Levine and Eddie
Solomon. He has one of the char-
acter leads in the senior class
play and was Northern High's
representative in the recent ex-
temporaneous speaking contest.
Jack Alkon, Leonard's father,
has an automobile agency in
Wyandotte. His brother, Sheldon,
is a Roosevelt School student.
Although he turned out for
