Congressman Coffee Sees 'Jew-
Baiting' in Congress

NEW YORK (WNS) — Rep-
resentative John M. Coffee of
Washington, speaking at the
Greater New York Emergency
Conference on Inalienable Rights,
charged that in Congress there
was not only "Negro-baiting, Jew-
baiting, immigrant-baiting, but
big city- baiting."
One of the leaders of the lib-
eral bloc in Congress, Rep. Cof-
fee scored the protagonists of
anti-alien and seditious bills and
said that he had fought the "un-
ethical functioning" of the Dies
Committee.

an aftermath of the arrest
and indictment of 17 members of
the Christian Front on charges
of plotting to overthrow the gov-
ernment by force, a widespread
inquiry into the uniformed and
civilian forces of the New York
Police Department, designed to
discover how many police officers
are members of "subversive" or-
ganizations, was launched here

this week by Police Commission-
er Lewis J. Valentine.
Questionnaires were distributed
to every member of the depart-
ment at the direction of Mayor
LaGuardia, who expressed the
belief that the investigation would
reveal that very few police offi-
cers were members of the Chris-
tion Front.
Although the questionnaire is
aimed primarily at discovering
the extent of Christian Front af-
filiation among members of the
police department, the investiga-
tion will disclose also how many
officers are "members of any
Communist, bund, or Fascist club
or organization."

No Quiz Among Firemen

Although the Federal Bureau
of Investigation had informed him
that at least 94 city firemen were
affiliated with the Christian Front,
the Mayor said that no question-
naire would be distributed among
the firemen. He explained that
the requirement for the police to
maintain civic neutrality did not
extend to the firemen.
Fire Commissioner John J. Mc-
Elligott said there would be "no
probing into the private lives of
my department."

GREAT NATIONALIST PLAY AT
LITTMAN'S THIS WEEK-END

"A People Without a Home" Is Highly Com-
mended by Local Rabbis

"A People Without a Home"
is the great play announced as
the attraction for this week-end
at Littman's People's Theater,
12th and Seward.
Having run continuously for
16 weeks in New York, this play
is highly recommended by lead-
ing rabbis, laymen, critics and
theatrical producers as one of
the most stirring productions in
many years.
Rabbis A. M. Hershman, Moses
Fischer and J. S. Sperka read
the script and commend the play
very highly.
Containing a strong nationalist
theme, this play deals with life

in leading Jewish communities
beginning with 1928, and leads
up to a touching Zionist climax.
It describes life in European
cities and then illustrates the
work accomplished in Palestine.
This play is being staged this
week-end--Friday evening, Feb.
16, Saturday evening, Sunday
matinee and evening, Feb. 18.
The Saturday evening perform-
ance is being given in order to
enable larger audiences to see the
production.
It is strongly urged that every
Detroit Jew should see this great
drama which will be presented
by the entire cast of Littman's
Theater.

of hatred" or fomenting anti-
Semitism. The Greater New York
Federation of Churches has is-
sued a proclamation to this effect
and has requested all clergymen
to sign it.
Earlier, the Brooklyn Federal
Grand Jury returned a two-count
indictment against the 17 Chris-
tian Front members who were
seized last month by the FBI.
The maximum penalty on both
counts is eight years in prison
and a fine of $15,000.
A thorough and fearless inves-
tigation of Father Coughlin by
the FBI and the Dies Committee
was demanded this week by
James Waterman Wise. Asking
the country to choose between
the philosophies of Abraham Lin-
coln and Father Coughlin, Wise,
speaking at the Free Synagogue
in Carnegie Hall, said that "at
this time when warring forces
throughout the world and foreign
propaganda of intolerance threat-
en tthe very foundations of
American democracy, Coughlinism
is a menace too sinister to be
ignored."

Pelley Arrested in Washington
After Release by Dies
Committee

WASHINGTON (WNS) — The
one-sided romance between Sil-
ver Shirt William Dudley Pelley
and the embarassed object of his
affections, the Dies Committee
Investigating un-American Activ-
ities, was climaxed this week with
the arrest of the Jew-baiter and
convicted stock swindler for ex-
tr adition to North Carolina.
Pelley, who admitted a "great
feeling of animosity toward
Jewry" in his testimony before
the Dies Committee, was arrested
at the request of North Carolina
officials, charged with the viola-
tion of a good-behavior provision
involved in a suspended sentence
imposed on him in North Caro-
lina several years ago in a stock
fraud case.
Ignoring the plea of E. Edward
O'Connell, Pelley's attorney, that
his client was "being framed,"
Judge Walter J. Casey ordered
Pelley held for an extradition
hearing on March 12 in the Dis-
trict Supreme Court. Bail was
set at $2,500.
Pelley said that he would in-
stall himself as head of the Uni-
ted States Government when "51
per cent of the people indorsed
our principles." In reply to a
question about Hitler, the Amer-
ican anti-Semite said that "Hitler
is putting down Communist and
subversive activities."
