Quiz New York Police on "Chris- tian Front" Affiliation As El 4 an aftermath of the arrest and indictment of 17 members of the Christian Front on charges of plotting to overthrow the gov- ernment by force, a widespread inquiry into the uniformed and civilian forces of the New York Police Department, designed to discover how many police officers are members of "subversive" or- ganizations, was launched here this week by Police Commission- er Lewis J. Valentine. Questionnaires were distributed to every member of the depart- ment at the direction of Mayor LaGuardia, who expressed the belief that the investigation would reveal that very few police offi- cers were members of the Chris- tion Front. Although the questionnaire is aimed primarily at discovering the extent of Christian Front af- filiation among members of the police department, the investiga- tion will disclose also how many officers are "members of any Communist, bund, or Fascist club or organization." No Quiz Among Firemen Although the Federal Bureau of Investigation had informed him that at least 94 city firemen were affiliated with the Christian Front, the Mayor said that no question- naire would be distributed among the firemen. He explained that the requirement for the police to maintain civic neutrality did not extend to the firemen. Fire Commissioner John J. Ignoring the plea of E. Edward O'Connell, Pelley's attorney, that his client was "being framed," Judge Walter J. Casey ordered Pelley held for an extradition hearing on March 12 in the Dis- trict Supreme Court. Bail was set at $2,500.
