MAKE THEM GROV/

These tree outlines will blos-
som forth into many living trees,
planted on the soil of Palestine,
as a result of the observance, on
Thursday, Jan. 25, of Chamisho
Osor Shevat, the 15th day of the
Hebrew month of Shevat, or Jew-
ish Arbor Day, since time im-
memorial a festival of Jewish
school youth.
In Palestine, the Jewish chil-
dren observe the day by going out
to the fields and forests and
planting new trees. On the initia-
tive of the Jewish National Fund
Youth Department, 111 Fifth
Avenue, New York City, the He-
brew and Religious Schools in the
United States have been supplied
with tree charts (reproduced
above) which show the progress
of Palestine tree planting. Un-
der the slogan "Make Them
Grow!" classes and pupils will
compete in the number of trees
they will plant. The planting is
effected by pasting Keren Kaye'
meth stamps on the bare tree out-

lines. Stamps in the amount of
$1.50 as a contribution to the
Jewish National Fund, make pos-
sible the planting of one tree.
In a call issued by the Ortho-
dox Rabbinate, over the signa-
tures of the officers of the Union
of Orthodox Rabbis in the United
States and Canada, the forthcom-
ing Saturday, Jan. 20, was desig-
nated as the Sabbath of the Jew-
ish National Fund for the pur-
pose of stimulating the planting
of trees on the occasion of Pales-
tine Arbor Day.
"Planting for the future is, in
a singularly symbolic and effec-
tive manner, the spirit and mes-
sage of Chamisho Osor Shevat
(Pan. 25, 1940), which will, with
God's aid, again be observed in
the Land of Israel and in Jew-
ish communities elsewhere as our
traditional New Year for Trees
and as an occasion for revitaliz-
ing the soil of the Holy Land
through the planting of new trees
