MEMORIAL RALLY
FOR JEWISH DEAD
IN POLAND NOV. 21
ONE OF NATIONWIDE
SERIES OF RALLIES
These are dark and doom-laden days for our people. A world of
turmoil has brought, indeed is bringing, further ruin and terror to
great historic Jewish communities. In many places'the Jew meets with
hate, suspicion, calumny and even violence. Poisoned voices speak and
poisoned pens continue to write even in our land of freedom.
What is happening to our children's sensitive hearts and alert
minds, as the tragedy of the present impinges upon them, and the
noise and strife re-echo within their own little childhood worlds?
What will their reactions be? What thoughts will crowd their minds?
What emotions will be aroused in their hearts? Will it be. despair or
hope, fear or courage, disillusionment or faith? What mental picture
of our people—and therefore of themselves--will they receive? Will
they not see Israel only as a lonely, helpless, suffering people; an
object of derision and hate?
Is that the picture we want them to bear in their minds? Would
we not want them to know of Israel as a great people; as a teacher and
light-bringer to mankind; as a people of destiny; as a veteran of great
and abiding achievement; as a people that bears aloft, and is borne by,
a great and indestructible Idea, as a people of God?
Only children fortified with an understanding of the religion of
the Jew, possessing a knowledge of the teachings of our prophets,
sages and saints will be able to stand up with dignity and look forward
with hope. Only a positive program of Jewish education can infuse
into the receptive spirits of our children faith, courage, invincible
strength ; and that self-respect which can come only through self-
knowledge and self-acceptance.
Jewish Parents!
To deepen the understanding and preserve the morale of our
young is our very first line of defense. What Jewish heart can remain
untouched during the solemn festivals we celebrate this month! What
Jew can remain unaware during these tragic days of his great responsi-
bility!
Jewish Education Month calls upon you, Jewish parents,
fulfill
the greatest of your responsibilities by bringing into the life to
your
child the treasures of Israel's past and the dreams for Israel's of
future.
WE APPEAL TO JEWISH PARENTS TO ENROLL THEIR CHILDREN
DURING THIS MONTH IN THE UNITED HEBREW SCHOOLS. Com-
petent teachers utilizing the most modern methods will induct your
child into the beauty and sanctity of Jewish life and tradition.
Delay No Longer!
"V'Shinantom I'bonecha," "And thou shalt teach them diligently
unto thy children," is the most urgent need for our day.

Carrying on a tradition established four years
ago, The Detroit Jewish Chronicle again dedicates
this issue as its annual Education Issue,
Recognizing the necessity for the perpetuation
of Jewish cultural values and for the continuation
of the tradition of advancing the cause of Jewish
education, The Chronicle is pleased to devote the
major portion of this issue to the discussion of edu-
cational and cultural problems.
This is a time for re-dedication to the sacred
principles of Judaism—to the ideals of learning and
of ethical Jiving. It is appropriate that there should
be a spirit of rejoicing in the community on the occa-
sion of the 20th anniversary of the schools, which
are being observed at this time.
The Detroit Jewis h Chronicle, in d
this Education Issue to the United Hebrew edicating
Schools,
congratulates them on this anniversary with the
hope that the aspiration for learning may continue
to serve as one of the sustaining forces in Jewish life.
