icy of silence ought to become a matter of the
forgotten past. Every attack should be answered.
For the sake of the record, no libel 'should be
permitted to go unchallenged.
To Jewa it should be apparent by this time
that we must speak for ourselves, that we must
defend our right, with dignity and with honor
and with courage. It is not enough that non-
Jews should speak for us. The Gentile world
will respect us all the more if we defend our-
selves.
What is the attitude of liberal Christians on
the method Jewa ought to pursue in fighting for
their rights? One of the most brilliant men be-
longing to this group is Dr. John Haynes Holmes,
pastor of the Community Church of New York.
Dr. Holmes recently made this statement:

is a viewpoint to be reckoned with. We
must refuse surrender! We must stand erect,
"with heart lifted in hope," "with voice lifted
in protest." The moment we stop protesting, we
admit defeat. We endorse this view with all due
respect to some of the Jewish leaders who would
have us adopt an attitude of "ignoring" the
attacker.

For Positive Action: Through Education

But above all else, we must abandon the nega-
tive methods of approach and must adopt a
forceful, positive program.

Our activities until now have been negative.
Even in our schools, our boys and girls have
been fed on the dangers of anti-Semitism. Such
an atmosphere endangers the clear thinking of
our children. They live in fear of the morrow,
because of what they read, what they hear on
the radio, whet their parents discuss.
The new planning must be changed to become
positive and constructive in nature. Emphasis
must be placed on Jewish education. on Jewish
learning, on information that will build think-
ing and well-informed Jewry.
Jewish life must not become so inferiorated
that everything we do is predicated upon the
fight on anti-Semitism. Lack of knowledge and
an internally disrupted Jewry can bring more
far-reaching dangers than Coughlinism and Pel-
leyiam and Moeeleyism. A well-informed young
Jewry will know how to face these issues. An ig-
norant Jewry will fall prey to despair and to
demoralization.
It would be • tragic mistake t o dispose of
the issues enumerated here without action,
under the delusion that the war will change
the entire scene and that the Jewish situ's.
Lion will be completely revolutionised in
spite of us. Because of the war, Jews must
be morn vigilant than ever. The war's after-
math witi call for renewed vigor in the fight
for equal. rights, in the effort to avoid the
repetition of abuses that followed the last
war, in securing just guarantees in Palestine
for the creation of the Jewish National Home
pledged by erect Britain at a time when
her position, of leadership was seriously
threatened by the Central Powers in 1917.
We need action, well planned and construc-
tively programmed.
We need a positive program.
We need the abandonment of negation in
Jewish life.
We need that knowledge that makes for power
and for honor and for self-respect.
The year 5700 must be made a period for
constructive planning in Jewish life.

has applied to the British courts
for permission to change his name
to Ben Gurion . . , The inter-
national Olympic Committee has
decided that the next Olympic
Games will take place in Tel Aviv
. . . The Palestine, team is ex-
pected to win first honors because
of its strength in long-distance
racing . . . Scientists claim that
the Jewish supremacy in marathon
running is attributable to the old
principle of the survival of the
fittest, which operated so effec-
tively in the days of illegal immi-
gration into Palestine, when only
those Jews able to outdistance
British and Arab police for long
stretches managed to survive . .
ANOTHER THIRTY-NINE
YEARS
A long stride forward to Rosh
Hashonah, 5789 ... The sensation
of the year just past was a
weighty tome by Professor Fritz
Schweinskopf, who long, long ago
occupied a chair in the University
of Berlin . . . In his book Pro-
fessor Schweinskopf tries to prove
that the German dictator Adolf
Hitler, who ruled Germany- from
1933 to 1942, never existed . . .
He cites at great length docu-
ments chock-full of evidence that
Hitler was a legend created by
international Jewry in order to
destroy Germany . . . Professor
Schweinskopf is the last survivor
of a curious sect, known as anti-
Semites, whom the present repub-
lican German government had seg-
regated in a special area, known
as the Nazi Reservation . .
After the death of Professor
Schweinskopf, who is well on in
yeara, the German government in-
tends to make the site of the
Reservation the locale of a huge
exhibition of Jewish cultural con-
tributions to German life before
the Nazis came into power . . .
So far, incidentally, the German
government's generous offers in its
efforts to induce Jews to return
to Germany have failed dismally
. . . As the year 5789 is being
ushered in a movement is being
organized to send German youths
out to Jewish settlements in Pales-
tine for the purpose of seeking
out Jewish girls to bring back to
Germany as their wives . .
Only by a vigorous campaign to
promote German-Jewish intermar-
riage, the Berlin Academy of
Science has declared, will it be
possible to revitalize the now de-
caying German culture . , . "Jew-
ish blood must live once more on
German soil" in the new slogan .. •
TURN OF THE CENTURY
And here we are in the year
5800 . The Italian government
has sent out a flotilla of pas-
senger ships which will call at
the various Mediterranean ports
pleading with the Jewish com-
munities there to persuade some
of their members to establish
themselves in Italy . . . The re-
sults of this expedition are very
probleinatic . . . The Jews of
Italian ancestry consider them-
selves the only pure Italians and
don't want to mingle with the
people now living in Italy, who
are largely descendants of the
German invaders who overran the
Italian peninsula ninety and a
hundred years ago ... The latest
flash from the U.S.S.R. tells of a
new purge there . . . The ruler
of the Soviet Union declares that,
the Communist State being in a
state of transition, drastic meas-
ures must be taken . . . Chaim ,
Inc., the internationally famous
pharmaceutical concern, has gone
into bankruptcy . .. Their well-
known patent medicine, Chaim,
the regular use of which assures
eternal life, and which sold like
hot cakes ten years ago, has grown
very unpopular since people dis-
covered that its claims are true
and that they cannot die as long
as they take it ... The only reg-
ular customer of Chaim in the
last few months has been Leon
Trotsky, who started taking the
first crude product, developed by
the grandson of the inventor of
the perfected medicine, almost a
century ago . . , Scientists are
wondering how long Trotsky—
whose new book, issued this year,
proclaims the imminent downfall
of the present regime in the Soviet
Union—will continue to live when
his supply of Chaim is exhausted
. .. Perhaps the biggest news of

H. Weizenbaum Invites De-

Workmanship as Furrier

H. Weizenbaum, expert fur-
rier, extends an invitation to the
Jews of Detroit to visit his shop
at 9150 12th St., to examine the
fine merchandise he selects for
his customers and to get an idea
of the expert workmanship he
puts into the garments he han-

Mr. Weizenbaum today prides
himself on the fact that in less
than two years he will be eli-
gible, with his wife and children,
to become citizens of this coun-
try. Several years ago Mr. Wei-
zenbaum was the famous and
successful furrier whose cus-

State and other important fig-

is truly proud—because he is in

BOMBAY. (WNS)—Following
the establishment of a new

government that the paper was
inciting anti-Jewish feeling and
that such incitement violated the
