Fred M. Butzel Believes Struggle Between Totali-

Have Gained Allies

BY FRED M. BUTZEL

Fleet Wing Gas and Motor Oils

At thid particular moment, Jewish affairs are
beginning to look up. The Jewish ,resistance in
Palestine has been conducted on such a high scale
and the Chamberlain government's maneuvering
has been so crude and unconvincing that the world
has gotten a new favorable picture of Jewish reali-
ties in Palestine.
Anti-Semitic racketeering seems to have reached
its peak and Jewish chauvinism seems to indicate
a decline. At last, through the appointment of
Dr. Haber and the creation of Refugee Service,
Inc., the distribution of immigrants is being han-
dled in a systematic manner and the period of ex-
periment and continuous readjustment is over.
The relationship of the cause of the Jews and
the cause of Democracy, the identification of anti-
Semitism and anti-religion, the incompatibility of
destroying rights of one minority and preserving it
for others, is being forced home on world con-
sciousness. The big struggle between totalitarianism
and liberalism is still ahead of us and the imme-
diate future is doubtful, but the Jewish position
is at last clearly defined and we have gained allies
who recognize that their interests and ours coin-
cide.

cape and to start life anew on
more hospitable shores goes out
to all who directly or indirectly
participated in this humanitarian
work.
As the prayers for a better
year on the advent of a new cen-
tury will be heard during this
High Holy Day season, "rescue
through emigration" will again
be on the agenda of an interna-
tional conference called to the
White house by our great presi-
dent, Franklin D. Roosevelt. What-
ever the result of these delibera-
tions, one thing is clear: we, the
nearest of kin must do our ut-
most to keep open for the refu-
gees and migrants, avenues of
escape and roads to new life. To
this urgent task, HIAS rededi-
cates itself at the advent of the
new century and cherishes con-
fident hope that it will continue to
receive the wholehearted and gen-
erous support of American Jewry
as it has been receiving during
the past half a century.

BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

By ABRAHAM HERMAN
President, Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society

As we usher in the New Year
5700 of the Hebrew calendar, we
face a new century in the life
of an ancient people who nas suc-
ceeded to overcome and survive
many and varied onslaughts and
persecutions that stem from man's
inhumanity to man.
At the turn of the century, the
persecution that was let loose
against us six years ago with the
advent of the Nazi plague, stands
at its cruelest peak. In all cor-
ners of the earth and on all seas
of the globe, the air is filled with
the woes of the victims of this
persecution and with their heart-
rending outcry for relief and res-
cue. IIIAS, as American Jewry's
arm of rescue, has been in the
front ranks of the "rescue through
emigration" work. It has minist-
ered to the need of the refugee
and the migrant whenever and
wherever it was only humanely
possible. The gratitude of those
thousands of refugees and mi-
grants that have been aided dur-

The extent of Nazi ambitions
for world conquest is indicated
by M. W. Fodor, the man whom
Dorothy Thompson, John Gun-
ther and others consider the ablest
European correspondent, in
"South of Hitler," the enlarged
and up-to-date edition of ''I'lot
and Counter-Plot in Central Eu-
rope," issued like its predecessor
by Houghton Mifflin Co.. Boston.
Germany is so confident of
achieving her aim of an eastern
conquest, Mr. Fodor, who barely
escaped with his life from Aus-
tria when the Nazis invaded the
country, states in "South of Hit-
ler." that Istanbul and Ankara
are no longer sufficient as ulti-
mate aim of this trend. Last
March 25, a fast airmail line was
opened between Berlin and Bag-
dad which covers the 2,500 miles
in 24 hours. Hitler congratulated
the King of Iraq on the occasion
of his birthday; he sent a tele-
gram of greeting to the Shah of
Iran on the occasion of the Hali-
fax festivities. It is now an-
nounced that Dr. Walter Funk
will continue his journey to Iran
and Afghanistan. It scenic that
even the Berlin-Bagdad dream is
not sufficiently daring for Hitler
and his friends. Their present am-
bitions go beyond Bagdad!"
"South of Ilitler" gives a bril-
liant resume of activities that
marked so many upheavals in
Europe in the past six years. Mr.
Fodor reveals that George von
Schoenerer. Austrian Social Dem-
ocrat, was the predecessor of
Nazism and he maintains that he
is the man who was imitated by
Hitler. "South of Hitler" is an
indispensable volume for those
who desire to understand fully
the background and aspirations of
Nazism.

truth on Jewish issues is Leo
Kaul's "Why Is the Jew Perse-
cuted Today?" Mr. Kaul's pam-
phlet is the first in a series to
be published under the title Li-
brary of Liberal Endeavor by
the author, at 115 S. Market St.,
Chicago.
Mr. Kaul's pamphlet describes
the problem of anti-Semitism,
deals with discrimination in Ger-
many and the cause of anti-Semi-
tism in Europe and devotes con-
siderable space to the attitude
of the Catholic Church on the
Jewish question. The entire Pam-
phlet is an appeal to reason, and
is motivoted by a desire to en-
courage people to know the true
facts regarding Jews.

of their livelihoods in recent
years by discriminatory legisla-

Paris told delegates to the world

Dr. Sherman, president of the
Palestine Medical Association, re-

where anti-Jewish laws are in

many more Jewish physicians to
Palestine.
