the leading paper in the state,
wrote about his recital at the

:Minister Chamberlain to place "Jewish manpower, technical ability
and 'resources" at the disposal of the British government evoked
from Mr. Chamberlain a message of appreciation for such preferred
support.
"Your public-spirited assurances are welcomed and will be
kept in mind," the Prime Minister declared in an exchange of
correspondence initiated by Dr. Weizmann on Aug. 29. On the
latter date, Dr. Weizmann wrote to Mr. Chamberlain:
"In this hour of supreme crisis, the consciousness that the
Jews have a contribution to make for the defense of sacred values
impels me to write this letter.
"I wish to confirm in the most explicit manner the declaration
that I and my colleagues made in recent months, especially in the
loot week, that the Jews 'stand by Great Britain and will fight on
the side of the democracies.'
"Our urgent desire is to give effect to these declarations. We
wish to do this in a way entirely consonant with the general scheme
of British action and, therefore, would place ourselves in matters
big and small under the coordinating direction of the British
government.
"The Jewish Agency is ready to enter immediate arrange-
ments for utilizing Jewish manpower, technical ability, resources,
etc.

In a letter dated Sept. 2, Prime Minister Chamberlain replied:
"1 should like to express my warns appreciation of the contents
of your letter and of the spirit which prompted it.
"It is true that differences of opinion exist between the
Mandatory and the Jewish Agency in regard to the policy on
Palestine. But I gladly accept the assurance contained in your
letter. I note with pleasure that in this time of supreme emer-
gency, when things which we hold dear are at stake, Britain can
rely on the wholehearted cooperation of the Jewish Agency.
"You will not expect me to say more at this stage than that
your public-spirited assurances are welcomed and will be kept
in mind."
OTTAWA. (WNS)—Defense Minister las MacKenzie revealed
that more than 5,000 American Jews had applied for enlistment
with the Canadian militia for service overseas but added that
American citizens were not eligible for enlistment since the Militia
Act requires that all candidates be British subjects. "No decision
has been made to 'turn Nelson's blind eye' in respect to the King's
regulations, which." MacKenzie said, "were honored during the
last war in the breach rather than in observavnce."
