Back to the Jungle
Reeking in blood, the world should
ask itself; are we back in the jungle?
Yes, the world has returned to the
jungle.
At the conclusion of the so-called World
War there was hope that democracy, rule
of and by and for the people, open dip-
lomacy, inter-racial and inter-national de-
cency, will at last prevail.
But human nature at its lowest pre-
vailed instead.
Instead of good will on earth we have
ill will and war and bloodshed and
hatred.
Instead of breaking the spears into
pruning hooks we have even deadlier
weapons—poison gases and bombshells
thrown from the air, horrible instruments
that destroy cities and their inhabitants,
poisonous chemicals that create havoc
and horror and make beasts of human
beings.
We are back in the jungle!
Man has to start all over again edu-
cating man.
Mankind must start from the begin-
ning, from Genesis, from the very first
page of the Bible, teaching people the
lessons of kindness and peace.
This is the time to repeat the words
of the Prophet Isaiah (II. 4), with a
prayer for its realization:
"And He shall judge among the na-
tions, and decide for many people; and
they shall beat their swords into
plough-shares, and their spears into
pruning-knives; nation shall not lift up
sword against nation, and they shall
not learn any more war."
A Month for Meditation
These are awe-inspiring days. As the
Jew ponders over his fate, during days
, of penitence and on the eve of the New
Year, he has opportunity to derive com-
fort from the historic experiences of the
past generations.
During this month of Elul, it is espe-
cially fitting that there be introspection,
that we mediate over our status.
There is consolation in our experiences
of thousands of years. In the First Cen-
tury, the Jewish philosopher Philo Ju-
daeus pointed out that even the most
humble need not despair. These words of
Philo Judaeus are applicable to Elul, the
month of meditation: "For most of us life
is simply an aggregate of unimportant
acts; but is none the less possession of
great worth to be worthily . used. To most
of us life presents no great issues but
to all it presents the great issue how to
live. We live for the most part uncon-
sciously, but it is necessary from time to
time to examine consciously our uncon-
scious living ... We can choose the way
of our life. Not in all things of life have
we a choice, but to every normal man
life presents one choice with the power to
choose; how he shall live ... Let no one,
however humble or insignificant he be,
despairing of a better fortune, scruple to
become a suppliant of God. Even he can
expect nothing more, let him give thanks
to the best of his powers for what he has
already received. Infinite are the gifts he
has: birth, nature, soul, sensation, imagi-
nation, desire, reason."
A great woman, George Eliot, once said
that no one need despair as long as there
is someone in whom he can place trust
and reverence. This has been a Jewish
principle. In this sacred period on the
Jewish calendar, it is well that we give
heed to such advice. It is imperative that
we have faith, as Jews, that good will
yet supersede evil.
Louis Marshall's Anniversary
Monday, Sept. 11, will mark the 10th
anniversary of the death, in Switzerland,
of the great American Jewish leader,
Louis Marshall.
Now, more than ever, Jewry misses the
genius of this great man.
He was firm in his beliefs, staunch in
his faith, unyielding in dealing with ene-
mies of righteousness.
He as in Switzerland, attending the
historic meeting at which the Jewish
Agency for Palestine was formed, when
he took ill. His last deed was a great act
leading to the creation of unity in Jewish
ranks and to the cementing of confidence
and friendship among the various fac-
tions in Jewry.
Much that he had built in his lifetime
has suffered during the past decade as a
result of world turmoil and the preva-
lence of ideas that have led to the present
madness. The events of these 10 years
have proven that we need men of the
courage and understanding of Mr. Mar-
shall.
American Jewry is not alone in honor-
ing the memory of Louis Marshall on the
10th anniversary of his death. World
Jewry honors his name.
