Father Coughlin s Program

In a recent radio broadcast, Father
Charles E. Coughlin reiterated his dis-
avowal of anti-Semitism and invited the
formation of a religious front of Jews,

Catholics and Protestatits to fight Com-
munism and to defend democracy. Several
days thereafter, during the broadcast of
the "Social Justice" program, emphasis
was laid on the "Christian Front" move-
ment as the necessary means for check-
ing Communism, and the announcer grew
eloquent in his announcement that 5,000,-
000 people are to be mobilized in this
"Christian Front," that public rallies will
be held, that youth athletic groups will
be sponsored. Last Sunday, the radio priest
himself spoke of the Christian Front as
his aspiration.
'These declarations, made four days
apart, are so contradictory that they call
for analysis and for evaluation. Perhaps
Father Coughlin himself is completely un-
aware of the clouds that are gathering
around his program in the name of which
so much damage has already been done,
and we venture, therefore, to call his at-
tention to a few facts.
- • Because the uninformed may be easily
misled by the first appeal, which calla
upon Jews and Christians to unite on a
common platform for action 'as Americans,
we pose the question to Father Coughlin:
Are you aware that for 12 years Jews and
Christians have been working together in
a common program for democracy, for
religious tolerance and good will, through
the National Conference of Christians and
Jews? Is it possible that you do not
know that for many years prior to the
formation of this Conference there have
been functioning movements, composed of
representatives of all faiths, whose pur-
pose was to defend the American way of
life and to create a state of co-operation
and understanding among all elements in
our population? Is it possible you do not
know'of the existence of a common front
in the veterans' organizations--including
the American Legion and the Disabled
American Veterans of the World War—
for the purpose of defending true Ameri-
canism and of opposing destructive isms
in this country?
If you do not know about the existence
of these movements, then you have been
woefully misled. Furthermore, if you
ignore the stand that has been taken by
Jewish organizations—including the Jew-
ish War Veterans, the Bnai Brith, the
Central Conference of American Rabbis—
in their attacks upon all isms, including
Communism, then you are acting without
considering the true facts in the case.
There are in existence today movements
which have the authority to unite Catho-
lics, Protestants and Jews in the fight
against destructive importations from
abroad which threaten the security of sac-
red American principles. Why not join
these movements, Father Coughlin, on a
basis of true equality among all citizens
of this Republic?
But there is inconsistency in your pro-
gram because in one breath you speak of
a common front of Jews and Christians
and in the next you speak of this country
as a Christian land. Is it possible that
you are unaware that the founders of this
great Republic never spoke of the United
States of America as a Christian country;
that the first principle of our Bill of Rights
forbids suppression of freedom of wor-
ship:. that State and Church are separate
under the Stars and Stripes?
In your name—because you are the
President and Editorial Counsel of Social
Justice Publishing Co.—"the voice of So-
cial Justice" launched endorsement and
advocacy of the "Christian Front" move-
ment, and you yourself now plead for it.
This is the movement, Father Coughlin, at
whose inspiration there have been dis-
turbances in the city of New York; whose
followers have sponsored public rallies at
which audiences have been asked to boy-
cott Jews, to "kill Jews;" the result of
whose activities has been incitement to
riot. Men have been stabbed in New
York by people who have worked under
the banner of the "Christian Front." In
Philadelphia the followers of the "Chris-
. tian Front" were known to have broken
up public meetings which were held under
the right of our Constitutional freedom.
What is your reply to actions of people
who hail you as their idol and who carry
your banners in the course of their de-
structive activities? Is it possible that
you do not know that salesmen of "Social
Justice" have been the leaders in these
un-American actions? If you have not read
then you should read all the documented
horrifying facts in the recent issue of The
Nation Magazine which point to a sad
state of affairs created by men and women
who look to you as their leader- - We refer
you to the editorial in th0 recent issue of
Commonweal Magazine (Catholic), in
which the activities of the "Christian
Front" were decried as follows:

ing all this, or for exactly what ends, but
we suggest that here is • real field for in-
vestigation.

Harry L. Jackson, president of
the Fresh Air Society, welcomed
members of the society's board of
directors and representatives of
the Jewish Welfare Federation
board of governors to Fresh Air
Camp on Sunday afternoon, July
30, when ceremonies were held
to dedicate the new camp clinic
and 'senior camp unit. The cere-
monies included the naming of
the camp administration building
as a memorial to the late Simon
and Rose Cohen in addition to
the dedicatory services. The im-
provements and additions to the
camp were made, possible by the
Carrie Sittig Cohen bequest.

Abrahalp J. Levin and Fred
M. Butzel were called upon by
Mr. Jackson to give a resum•
of the history of the work of the
Fresh Air Society which estab-
lished Fresh Air Camp 35 year
ago. The officers of the origi-
nal Fresh Air Society Board,
elected by the 45 charter mem-
bers, were Ida V. Koppel, presi-
dent; Ruth Freedman, vice-presi-
dent; Helena Breitenbach, treas-
urer; and Nanette C. Weinman ,
secretary. The first annual re-
Port presented in the fall of
1904, records 31 outings for 175
children under the protection of
44 volunteer chaperones.

If not the police force then there is one
individual who can put a stop to the das-
tardly actions of the so-called "Christian
Front," whose program is endorsed on
your broadcasts. That man is Father
Coughlin. One word from you, Reverend
Sir, will be enough to put an end to the

Have you made a study, Reverend Sir,
of the members of the Committee of Catho-
lics to Fight Anti-Semitism to ascertain
whether it is fair, or wise, to brand fellow-
Catholics gas Communists? Do you know
that among the members of this Commit-

of Catholic Worker ; Prof. James J. Burns
of Nazareth College of Kalamazoo, Mich.;
Dean Eben James Carey of the medical
school of Marquette University, Milwau-
kee; Miss Dorothy Day, editor of Catho-
lic Worker; Dr. Charles J. Donahue, Wil-
liam H. Hines, Dr. A. Paul Levack, Dr.
Harry McNeill, Dr. Robert Pollock, Daniel
J. Sullivan, all members of the faculty of
Fordham University, New York; George
Donahue, editor of The Labor Leader;
David C. Dunne and Donald A. Gallagher,
editors of the St. Louis Catholic; Edward
Skillin, editor of Commonweal; Gene Tun-
ney, distinguished sportsman, and scores
of other outstanding Catholic leaders
among whom are eminent economists,
scientists, journalists, professors, men and
women who are prominent in every walk
of life.
But instead of commending a worthy
effort to combat anti-Semitism and race
hatred and to defend religious and demo-
cratic rights, you brand fellow-members
of your faith as Communists. True, they
attack your radio broadcasts and your
magazine articles. But they answer you
with facts. Let the truth rule. And having
mastered the truth, perhaps you r too, Fa-
ther Coughlin, will append your name to
the imposing list of the members of the
Committee of Catholics to Fight Anti-
Semitism.
This is a battle for decency and for
truth. We .urge you, Father Coughlin, to
exert your influence with your followers
in New York and elsewhere to put an end
to the existing campaign of terrorizing
Jewish citizens. And we urge, also, that
instead of condemning fellow-Catholics as
Communists that you join with them in
the fight against race hatred. The Nazis
have pursued a policy of linking Jews
with Communism. You, too, are charged
with being guilty of the same offense. Now
we read a similar offense against Catho-
lics in "Social Justice." We call upon you,
as the first step in a program for good
will and tolerance, to abandon such tactics
and to join in a real effort of American
inter-faith action for justice and against
intolerance.

The Jeffersonian Way

Quoting Thomas Jefferson: "I am ready
to say to every human being 'thou art my
brother' and to offer him the hand of
concord and amity."
This is the American way of thinking.
This ought to be the American way of
living. This principle must be put into
practice by all faiths—Protestant, Catho-
lic and Jewish alike.

smokescreen." "Just another pup-
pet who dances to the tune of Sta-
lin" was another form of refer-
ence by the "Voice" to Dr.*Cole.
An examination of the text of
Rev. Cole's address will show that
the commentator for Father
Coughlin has again distorted facts.
The "Voice" again ignored the
challenge of Dr, Cole for unity of
Christians and Jews for defense of
true Americanism. Reiterating de-
nial of the charge that Coughlin
is an anti-Semite, his commenta-
tor completely ignored the quota-
tion from Social Justice magazine
by Dr. Cole showing indecent ref-
erence to the Jewish General Coun-
cil.

Hatred—Unbearable

Two news stories in recent days had a painful
lesson for Americans.
One story, from Denver, told about o patient
at the National Jewish Hospital who, driven in-
sane by the idea that "the Nazis are after me,"
shot at two nurses and then killed himself.
The next day, under the heading "Germans Go
Home; Hatred Unbearable," one of our afternoon
papers carried this story under a New York head-
line:

Both stories suggest the tragic effects of a
world going mad. Jews, even in this country; live
in dreaded fear of the possible outbursts of anti-
Semitic volcanoes which will engulf them as hat-
red has engulfed the Jews in Europe. Our entire
existence has assumed a negative aspect. Instead
of creating , Jewish values, we are engaged in
answering anti-Semites. Rather than build Jew-
ish cultural standards, we are concerned lest the
Bund, Nazi-inspired by propaganda from abroad,
should undermine our security. The wonder is
not that one man has gone made in Denver. The
wonder is that there are so few Jews who are
driven to insanity. In the entire history of Nazi
rule, over Germany there have been only two as-
sassinations of Nazi officials by Jews. It is an

amazing record of restraint and refusal to adopt
terroristic methods in dealing with terrorists.
But the second story is much more disturbing.

It is possible that it was manufactured as ex-
cellent pro-Nazi propaganda, since it remains to
be proven that non-Jews have become so aroused
over the outbursts of prejudice as to threaten
Germans on this continent that for every Jew
forced out of Germany they will hang one of
them. This, too, is fantastic. It is unbelievable.
It sounds definitely like Nazi propaganda.
How is such falsehood to be counteracted? It is
difficult to undo such damage once it has been
spread in front page newspaper stories. But it
does carry a lesson with it. It is this:
Germans in this country, and in Canada, are
not responsible for the Nazi horrors. Large num-
bers of Germans are outraged by what has taken
place. They are humiliated by what is taking
place in the Reich. These Germans are not ene-
mies. They are friends. When 'speaking of a
boycott, or in attacking Nazism, the line must be
drawn between Nazis and Germans, and especially
between Germans who support Nazism in Ger-
many and the friendly Germans in this country.
But this happens to be exactly the procedure
that has been followed in the entire history of
the boycott movement. How, therefore. is the
libel quoted in the above story to be accounted
for? There is only one answer: Nazism works
havoc not only in Germany but also in this coun-
try. Nazi propagandists have invaded America.
No sensible person can possibly believe the fan-
tastic fable that comes from Saskatchewan,
Anti-Nazi Germans have an obligation. equal
with that of the Jews, to refute such libels. If the
lie is not branded, an American ideal that stands
for truth and decency will be at stake.

Palestine Shows the Way

Palestine Jewry shows the way in the battle
for justice and for fearlessness. In spite of the
difficulties that face the Jewish community of
Ereti Israel, our pioneers refuse to be cowed
into inaction and into a state of panic.
Recently the Jews of Palestine proceeded
on their consistent path of building in the face
of danger. A few hundred yards from the ruins
of ancient Dan, in the farthest northeastern cor-
ner of Palestine, 100 pioneer families have laid
the foundation for two new Jewish settlements
to be' known jointly as "Metzudath Ussishkin,"
meaning Fort Ussishkin and built in tribute to
the great world Jewish leader and head of the
Jewish National Fund on the occasion of his
70th birthday.
This is how a proud people should build: not
by hiding its head ostrich-like in the sand when

DONATE AIR-CONDITIONING UNITS
TO HOSPITAL'S CHILDREN'S WARD

The Children's Ward at Re-
ceiving Hospital will be provided
with air-conditioning and air-
cooling equipment as the gift of
Sanford D. and Milton C. Adler,
president and general manager
respectively of Conditionaire,
Inc.
This gift has been approved
for acceptance by the Common
Council by the Public Welfare
Commission. It was offered when
public notice was called by the
Free Press to the fact that the
Children's Ward temperature is
10 to 16 degrees higher than the
temperature in the street.
Dr. Don M. Morrill, superin-
tendent of the hospital, recom-
mended that the gift be accepted
with whole hearted approval.
"We believe it would be a
useful adjunct to the Children's
Ward of the hospital, if the
Council sees fit to accept it," Dr.

Hugo A. Freund, a member of
the commission, said. "We be-
lieve air-conditioning and air-
cooling equipment would aid ma-
te•ially to the well-being and
comfort of the patients in the
Children's Ward."
The Council received the offer
Monday with expressions of grati-
tude and referred it to the wel-
fare commission for action. The
commission, at Dr. Morrill's sug-
gestion, also approved acceptance
of $23 sent to the Free Press
by sympathetic readers.
Dr. Morrill also reported that
he had received an anonymous
offer for fans and awnings for
the Children's Ward and other
hospital divisions. He received
approval to accept the gifts.
Robert Dishell, secretary of

Conditionaire, said that it would
take about 10 days to install the
equipment,

For Freedom in Offering Prayers .

Even in the field of offering prayers, it becomes
necessary to fight for tolerance.
From Madison, Wis., comes the news that mem-
bers of the Madison Ministerial Association have
issued a declaration that unless they are assured
freedom in offering prayers they will refuse to
serve as chaplains of the Wisconsin State Senate.
This stand was taken unanimously by about 30
pastors of the Evangelical Protestant congrega-
tions after a meeting that had been called to
discuss removal of the Rev, A. L. Eddy's name
from the Legislature's list. The latter was re-
moved from the eligibility list by the chief clerk
of the State Senate on criticism from Senator
Harry Bolens of Port Washington, Wis. Rev.
Eddy of the Plymouth Congregational Church had
invoked the wrath of God "upon all betrayers
of the people, who seek to corrupt public officials,
and little men in large places who stoop to canny
shrewdness to thwart a people's will and reduce
the business of public affairs to mistrust and con-
tempt." Senator Bolens, arising after Mr. Eddy
had offered the prayer, called the invocation "un-
Christian."
Dr. Everett Clinchy, director of the National
Conference of Jews and Christians, outlined the

that of Gregor Zimer, former

back to this country for good .
When asked to define the differ-
ence between American democ-
racy and German Nazidom he de-
livered this nifty: "Ilere, when
you hear a knock at G A. M. it

a book under the title "All In the Name of

God." Here is an instance of a political outburst
which might just as well have been directed
against the admonitions of an Amos or an Isaiah
or a Jeremiah. The Rev. Eddy exercised the free-
dom that belongs to a preacher to condemn ac-
tions that tend to destroy public trust. A politi-
cian objected and a political office-holder saw
fit to curb freedom in offering prayer before a
legislative body. Was this too "in the name of

God?"

MICHIGAN CONFERENCE CONDEMNS
HOLY DAY "MUSHROOM" SERVICES

A resolution denouncing the
establishment of private. "mush-
room" congregations in theaters
and halls for Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur services was adopt-
ed by the board of directors of
the Michigan Synagogue Confer.
ence, at its quarterly meeting

held last Sunday in Mt. Clemens.

The state-wide body of tradi-
tional orthodox congregations
voiced opposition to the practice
of certain individuals and groups
who seek to commercialize the
religious sentiments and needs of

the Jewish community. A special
committee, consisting of Rabbi

M. J. Wohlgelernter, Conference
secretary; David I. Berris, Mor-
ris Mtahr and Abraham J. Rosen-
shine, was appointed by Isadore
Cohen, president of the Michigan
Synagogue Conference, to devise
steps for eradicating this evil.
In the discussion of the reso-
lution, at the ML Clemens meet-
ing, which was presided over by
David J. Cohen, vice president
and chairman of the board, it
was pointed out that these

bers charged. Indignation was ex-
pressed by members of the hoard
against certain philanthropic or-
ganizations which are contem-
plating the formation of "M .
vonim" for the New Year and
the Day of Atonement, and the
committee was directed to point
out to these organizations the
danger of losing the support of

the Detroit congregations for
their work if they persist in such
nractices.
Other recommendations voted
by the board of directors include:
