Condemning Father Coughlin's
threat, in his broadcast last Sun-
day, that he will resort to the
"Franco way" in propagating his
program, Dr. Cole said
'Since the days when those
first refugees from the tyrannies
of the Old World first came to
our shores, down to the present
moment we have been trying to
build up in this nation an atti-
tude toward races and religious
groups which might be called
the American Way.' This is an
attiture of mutual respect, of not
attributing the undesirable quali-
ties of a few members of any
group to the whole group, either
by direction for indirection. 'The
American Way' is to judge peo-
ple, not on the basis of their ra-
cial or religious affiliation, but
as fellow human-beings.
"Communists and Fascists are
delighted when they see our
democratic unity threatened by
divisions of clans against class, of
race against race, or religion
against religion.
"At this time when we so des-
perately need the combined ef-
forts of all Americans--Catholics,
Jews and Protestants alike—to
fight our common foes of social
and economic injustice, it would
be tragic to dissipate our energies
in futile anti-Semitism or anti-
Catholicism. Prejudice is like a
prairie fire: it never remains in
one place but spreads in a dread-
ful way of conflagration.
"Many efeople, Catholic and
non-Catholic, are alarmed lest the
incendiary words of Father Cough-
lin furnish the sparks that will
light once more the dreadful un-
American and un-Christian fiery
crosses of anti-Catholicism.

"Back in the days when the
bigoted, un-America n Ku Klux
Klan terrorised America I lift-
ed up my voice in protest. I
pray God that never again may

Referring to Father Coughlin's
denial that he is an anti-Semite,
the Rev. Cole said:
"Father Coughlin, you pretend
to be surprised that millions of
religious people, Catholics, Prot-
estants and Jews alike, regard you
as
anti-Semite. Father Cough-
. an .
,
invite you to turn to the
files of your magazine, Social
Justice, imagine yourself now for
the moment a member of that
race to which our Lord Jes•
Christ belonged—suppose, Father
Coughlin, that by the accident of
birth you were a Jew and you
turned to page 5 of the April 24
issue of Social Justice and came
across the following reference to
your highest body in the United
St ates: 'There is no need here to
probe into the Jewish General
Council and spread its entrails out
for examination.' How would you
feel? Would you think that So-
cial Justice magazine was anti.
Semitic or not? For shame!"
Expressing confidence that
American democracy will survive,
Dr. Cole concluded by stating:
"Let us be very sure that we
do not confuse the issues involved
in this discussion. It has been as-
serted that only those who are
communistic or are influenced be
'over-sensitive Jews' protest
against Father Coughlin's anti-
Semitism. The issue is not so
simple; It is NOT a case of the
Communists against Coughlin.
Nor is it merely Father Coughlin
against the Jews. There are thou-
sands of us non-Jews, Catholics
and Protestants alike, who, with-
out being unduly influenced by
'over-sensitive Jews,' nevertheless
see - in-the-anti-Semitism which Fa-
ther Coughlin has aroused a grave
danger to American life, The iv-
sue is one of unhealthy prejudice
EIS
against healthy tolerance .
" A century ago, Horace Mann.
that great Unitarian educational
Pioneer, declared that in a nation ,
like our s, ignorance is
a crime .
And, may I add, that ignorance
of the danger lurking in all prop-
aganda which arouses prejudice
and ill-will may be suicide for
American democracy.
"I believe that our American
democracy will survive, provided
that we speak and act with preju-
diee for none but with tolerance
and justice for all—Catholic,
Protestant and Jew alike. If we
are to save American democracy
we must not only live and let lives
'we must live and help live.' "

CHECKING ACCOUNT
OR BANK ACCOUNT

There is an important difference between issuing checks
against a stun of money deposited only to meet such checks
and a bank account.

A bank account is one which, while checks are drawn against
it, is being built up. It establishes your banking record over the
years, solidifies vital banking connections, and contributes to
your credit standing.

Thus, when a tradesman or a bUsiness, for the purposes of
credit references, asks "Do you have a bank account",' that is

what is meant. When you give the National Bank of Detroit
as your banking reference it is immediately recognized in the
established sense.

The National Bank of Detroit considers every one of its
customers' accounts on which checks are drawn as a bank
•account regardless of the size of the original deposit. Your
checks drawn On this hank are so regarded by those who
receive them.

You are cordially invited to discuss this important distinction
with any of our officers or with any of the managers in our
28 conveniently located branches.
