Much has been written about
the rise of immigrant families,
their lowly start in this land,
their thrift, their Americaniza-
tion. But very little has been
said about the experiences of im-
migrant children. Therefore a
story devoted to the experiences
of an immigrant lad is of more
than passing interest.
"Golden Gate," written and il-
lustrated by Valenti Angelo (Vik-
ing, $2.) is just this type of
story. It Is a beautifully told
tale about Nino, an Italian
youngster, who comes to this
country with his family. His
experiences might just as well
be been those of a Jewish or a
French or a Greek lad. First
there is the cross-oceanic trip.
Then the lad finds Bleecker St.
in New York not unlike an Ital-
ian environment. But the thrills
of life in the new land begin
when the family settles in Cali-
fornia. At school, Nino is Jeered
at for his clothes and his lack
of knowledge of English. He is
molested by ruffians. He fights
back. But it is all a part of the
process of Americanization.
Soon, Nino becpmes a part of
his environment. He thrills in
the Fourth of July parade. He
takes part in all the normal ac-
tivities of any American boy. He
is an American and he loves the
new land and its people.
"Golden Gate" is a splendid
story of Americanization. Nino
might just as well have been
Jacob or Nicolai or Georges. Its
theme is applicable to any new-
comer.
It is a part of the
scheme of building a great and
free nation.

Get Temporary Haven

PARIS. - Two small German
steamers loaded with Jewish
refugees have been given tempo-
rary refuge at Beirut, Lebanon,
following the outbreak of a pesti-
lence among the passengers,
French authorities announced.
The disease developed after a
wave of suicides had been re-
ported among the refugees, who
despaired of finding a haven af-
ter weeks of wandering.
The steamers Breslau and
Osiris, carrying more than 1,000
passengers, were admitted to the
Beirut Harbor.
Another refugee-laden German
ship, the Thessaly, was found to
be free from the disease and was
obliged to put back to sea with
her 800 passengers. A fourth
ship, with 700 on board, was re-
ported cruising in the same re-
gion seeking to land its refugees.
The four ships all together
have aboard 2,560 refugees, in-
cluding many women and chil-
dren.
Turned away from the Pales-
tine coast by British destroyers,
skippers of the vessels reported
that they finally had been al-
loyed to enter Turkish ports for
food supplies before being forced
out to sea.
Palestine Jews demanded that
local authorities in the Holy
Land assist in disembarking the
refugees.

ule would not be issued next Oc-
tober.
The acceptance of the resolu-
tion of condemnation followed a
series of addresses by leaders of
English and European Jewry as
well as Commander Oliver
Locker-Sampson, noted M. P.,
and the reading of a message
from Dr. Chaim Weizmann.

hum Goldmann, members of the

Goldbloom were among the

mander Locker-Sampson.
A strong protest azainst the
"injustice of the White Paper"
was sounded by Commander
Locker-Lampson, who said that
he had voted against approval of
the White Paper even though he
is a government sunnorter. "The
rovernment sold Palestine to
their enemies," he charged. say-
ing that "the Jews must finht on
until the White Paper is de-
stroyed. If the Jews remain
united the world over their hopes
will be achieved."
Referring to the traeie plight
of the refugees, he mid: "If I
were a Jew, i would do every-

thing to make Jews enter Pal-
estine." He concluded with an
