PURELY COMMENTARY

PREJUDICE FOUND
TO BE INCREASING

(CONCLUDED . :ROM PARE ONE)

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

Thank God for America!

There is no more fitting way with which to
open the New Year, 1939, than with the words:

THANK GOD FOR AMERICA!

It is a prayer that can not be repeated too
often. Across both oceans which wash the shores
of this•great land there is poverty, slavery, bigot-
ry, degradation.
Here we have freedom, the right to speak
our minds, the privilege of criticizing our Presi-
dent if we choose, the blessings that go with
democracy—and with human decency.
Here we do not have to measure our words. We
are obligated, by the blessings of this great land,
not to abuse the privileges that go with demo-
cratic government. But if ever we err we know
that we can make amends and that the concen-
tration camp is not the corrective way for free
men and women.
We know that here synagogues will not be
burned at the instigation of an insane govern-
ment.
We know that little children will not be
abused. that they will not be torn away from
their parents and sent to, strange lands for
adoption. We know that men and women will
not be subjected to unheard-of inhuman de-
gradation simply because they worship differently
from the majority.

fg

as the necessity of taking up aims, sooner or
later, and launching a second world war after the
pattern of the first. If ever there was a time
for conciliation. appeasement, tact and patience,
it would seem to be now, when the fascist powers
are no desperately belligerent. War is not neces-
sary, not even in such a hellish scene of chaos
as now is Europe. But it may be made inevitable
by the anti-Fascists who would resort to arms to
destroy Hitler, no matter what the cost not merely
to Hitler, but the world. Must we sink a ship
in order to drown a rat; destroy a world in order
to dethrone a tyrant?"
Here is a warning that MUST be heeded, un-
less we choose to be destroyed instead. "Must
we sink a ship in order to drown a rat?" It is
easier to kill the rat—in order to save the ship
and all aboard it—provided it is done on time.
and with the right weapon. The boycott is the
weapon. If used on time, this weapon will not only
save the world but will also save the German
people. But if we wait too long, if we make con-
cessions, if we choose to be blind to reality, then
all that is decent will perish with the tyrants.

Helen Keller Favors the Boycott

1937-38, the study reveals that
since the advent of Nazism the
f r e q u en c y of discriminatory
specifications has grown progres-
sively higher, until in 1937-38,
these frequencies have reached
heights far in excess of the pre-
ceding years. This finding, says
the report, was substantiated
through data obtained by a sur-
vey of the leading employment
agencies in New York City.
About half of the 90 major
agencies interviwed stated defi-
nitely that "discrimination is on
the increase." They sense a
marked tendency to make Jews
marginal workers, that is, to be
the very last hired and the very
first fired when entering the
period of economic decline.
The daily broadsides of col-
umns of advertisements marked
"Christian," "Christian f i r m ,"
"Anglo-Saxon" and similar limi-
tations "deliver a steady flow of
serious anti-Jewish propaganda
penetrating millions of American
bogies," says the report.
Employment agencies are to
an important extent responsible
for this deporable situation, ac-
cording to the report. In New
York City alone 2,000,000 per-
sons annually obtain w o r k
through agencies.
In the City of New York, the
report points out, 3 per cent of
Jewish youth, 115,000, are un-
employed. Forty thousand of
them have never held a job.
Quoting from the recent report
of the Welfare Council of New
York, Rabbi Cohen reveals "un-
employment among Jewish youth
in New York is greater, espe-
cially in the case of males, than
among white Protestant work-
ers."
The commission on economic
problems calls attention to the
inequities directed against Jews
by public utilities, such as the
New York Telephone Company
and the Consolidated Edison
Company, the Edison Company,
employing about 250,000 persons
in the entire State and the New
York Telephone Company 40,000
in the State, 30,000 of whom
work in New York City.
Discrimination is practiced
e Yen by quasi-governmental
agencies. Discrimination is par-
ticularly rampant also, says the
report, among private schools.
Thirty-six private schools, with a
total enrollment of 8,000 and a
teaching staff
of
800 were
studied. Of these schools 11
were found fair in their employ-
ment policy, the remaining 25
doubtful or clearly unfair. Nine
of the 11 fair schools are owned
by Jews. Discrimination is most
widespread against Jewish teach-
ers in those private schools own-
ed by non-Jews but which have
large Jewish enrollment.
Through the efforts of the
American Jewish Congress, in
part, New York State adopted a
law under which school authori-
ties and teachers' agencies are
forbidden to inquire regarding
religious affiliation of applicants
in the public school system. An
effort is being undertaken to
make this legislation nationwide.
It is now in the midst of secur-
ing the cooperation of news-
papers in moulding of a uniform
policy respecting unfair adver-
tisements, according to the re-
port.
