Appropriate reading for the

the Jews in Germany is Peter

Simultaneous with the appear-
ance of this book comes the an-
nouncement of the publishers
that Mr. Mendelssohn has ar-
rived in the United States for a
lecture tour of the East and
Middle West. Mr. Mendelssohn is
an exile from Nazi Germany. Ile
is a descendant of Felix Mendel-

The children's bookshelf is
gradually increasing, and the for-
mer lack of suitable stories for
the young folks is now being
eliminated.
Among the books which help fill
this need is Edith Lindeman Ca-
lisch's "Fairy Tales From Grand-
father's Big Book," published by
Behrman's Jewish Book House,
1261 Broadway, New York City.
Ilenriette Strauss has done the
fine illustrations for this book.
In all there are 14 stories and
13 illustrations. The complete
set of stories is well connected
with an ainterjection of grandfa-
ther's comments. It is thus given
a connecting link, and although
each story is sufficient unto itself
and independent from the others,
the connecting link makes their
reading more fascinating.
"The Quarrel of the Cat and
Dog" is an example of ancient
Jewish folklore. The story is
based on a legend which is in-
corporated in Dr. Louis Gina-
berg's "Legends of the Jews"
published by the Jewish Publica-
tion Society in seven volumes.
All the other stories are simi-
larly based on traditional re-tell-
ing from generation to genera-
tion. and all of them as a part
of the rich storehouse of Jewish
folklore.
This is a splendid book, and its
appearance helps solve a problem
for home and school: for the lat-
ter because it provides another
good Jewish child's story book:
for the former because it sug-
gest a good gift book and a
splendid addition to the children's
library.
