For Self-Defense

There are approximately 450,000 Jews in Pal-
estine, but their will to participate in reconstruc-
tion and relief efforts is by far out of proportion
to their numbers or to their financial means. This
has been proven during drives for relief of Polish
Jews, and during campaigns for the Jewish Na-
tional Fund. New proof came a few days ago
when it was reported that Palestine Jewry had
contributed $250,000 towards the Kofer Ilayishuv,
the self-defense fund. American Jewry, 10 times
larger than the Palestine settlement, has thus far
contributed less than a fifth of this amount to
the defense fund. Perhaps Eretz Israel is destined
to teach us a lesson in generosity.

Born in a Ditch

When the history of the present migrations of
Jews who are denied homes in horror-stricken Eu-
rope is finally written, the birth of a baby in a
ditch on the Czech-German border will serve as a
symbol of the degradation which has dragged down
the rulers over the destinies of the 20th century
into the lowest depths of barbarism. The mother
of the baby is one of 54 refugees who had fled
Sudentenland and were forced to live jn, ditches
in "no-man's land" because of Czechoslovakia's
refusal to admit them. It is no wonder that this
century is now being compared with the preceding
one as marking a reversion to terror and hoodlum-
ism.
The baby born in a ditch was named "Niemand"
—meaning No One or Nobody. In the light of
historic experiences the baby was mis-named,
because eternal life goes on, and Jews. even
when born under the heels of persecutors, never
abandon hope or sell their birthright.
